Will this use up data like WhatsApp or would it come of a texting allowance like normal SMS?

Doesn't sending over RCS cost you just like SMS's would? I mean, why not further use WhatsApp or some other app then for free over Wifi?

AnonD-804996, 29 Dec 2018You don't have to, but I know people will, because people l... moreI certainly agree that most of us are not good at designing stuff. At best we can see when something is good/bad, and that is unfortunately not the same as saying we are able to make it look good.
Nothing is technically preventing people from doing horrible things char based either. There are a lot of bad texts out there...
I guess the crucial thing will be how the RCS editor/designer is made. To be used broadly it needs a simple UI, and with some luck some skilful people will create something that help us. Think like WordPress themes, that help us graphically ignorant people from not making sites too horrible, in similar way we could be helped making RCS.
Personally I guess that the best thing would be to be able to keep images at the correct place in a text stream. When I today send an MMS with say three pictures with text in between, it is unfortunately broken into multiple MMS, with a block of text and an image each, and they do not always arrive in the correct order. (same bug as the earliest SMS until they added the "i/n" in the start of each)
I doubt that I would use advanced formatting RCS much, but will welcome the possibility.

I much prefer a simple ASCII smiley than that colorful vomit inducing garbage. SMS was meant for simple communication when not reachable via phone call. And it should stay at that. It's nothing wrong by keeping things basic. Just look at e-mail. Remember when ppl were stuffing stupid comic sans and images on all ends to how we now mostly have clean plain text e-mails these days? Thank god for "regressions" like this...

That RCS has the possibilities of more fancy stuff than simple SMS and MMS does not mean you have to overuse it. And just as you can avoid webpages with a lot of animated junk, you can avoid communicating with people that overuse the options. If it does not work asking them not to.
It would be much more convenient with e.g. tickets as an RCS, than an attached pdf in a mail, that is currently commonly used.

In all the RCS talk, it should be remembered that it has been around for quite a while.
My ancient SonyEricsson (Neo) Pro from 2011 got it (as well as its siblings Ray, Neo, and Arc).

I'm using Textra (paid version) as SMS app combined with SwifKey keyboard app, and the RCS screen shouts from the article, looks like the ones I have right now...

Samarth, 29 Dec 2018Total tool for privacy invasion by Google, US Government, p... moreFirst of all, your carrier and your government can read your SMS messages if needed. So much for security.
Second, RCS is not a messaging platform controlled by google. It's just a new protocol to replace the old SMS protocol, that's it. RCS is still controlled by carriers and messages will go through the cell networks from carrier to carrier just like SMS.
Besides, RCS is not even a google made protocol. It was started in 2007 and is maintained by the GSM Association.

RCS is just SMS with more colorful garbage in them. No thanks.
Anyone who remembers MSN Messenger after they stuck emojis in it, it became a vomit inducing garbage. Everyone posting those stupid emojis in messages, in their names, everywhere. Stupid and not needed. SMS is straight to the point text message. And that's all I need from it. Only thing that needs evolving is MMS. And only in terms of attached image quality. Other than that, nothing else.

Total tool for privacy invasion by Google, US Government, probably our govt and maybe, snoopers on the internet too!
Let SMS remain.
Instead of making Android OS a paid OS and removing the ads and crap, they're just going overboard with unneeded stuff.
For once, why don't they listen to us??
