Honor View 20 to be capable of 960 fps video

20 December 2018
Two other event posters had already leaked revealing a 4000 mAh battery and a 25MP selfie camera.

Hoping the stabilization in the camera is as good as that in Mate 20 pro. I really look forward to having one of this phone.

Andy, 22 Dec 2018Doesn't matter if it isn't stabilisedand why would i be running around whilst taking a slow mo video?

Basically, the honor 960fps super slow motion could be only entitled for 720p.

Shanti Dope, 21 Dec 2018I don't think DRAM is that expensive on camera sensors, but... moreBandwith is the problem here and I don't think phones are able of PCIe bus (Visual Core is a simple PCI devie, though Apple uses NVMe storage over a PCIe bus)

AnonD-558092, 21 Dec 2018It's interpolation indeed. And yesh the results aren't anyt... moreTrue, if Google did the frame interpolation technique, you'll see better results, they're pretty good at software anyway. Of course, I'll always be happy if it's a hardware thing

AnonD-558092, 21 Dec 2018I get that the use case of this feature is rather limited (... moreI don't think DRAM is that expensive on camera sensors, but in practical terms, it would be inconvenient, as the sensor itself would get thicker, which would definitely not fit in this era of slim-sexy phones.
To compensate for this, I think they should add more DRAM, but put it on the motherboard instead, and have it connected to the DRAM of the sensor in order to increase the capacity, but that would take a high-speed data transfer cable, and still may not allow an endless 960fps video capturing. Maybe it would extend the 960fps capture to about 1 minute, which is still better than the measly 0.18s that our current ones could do.

Hope it is triple camera with main 48MP one and an ultra wide angle (if wide angle I dont care if 3rd is depth sensor) but single 48MP is more likely because Honor showcased it with single camera

xXENDER FREAKXx, 21 Dec 2018Or should I say, frame interpolation technique? Currently, ... moreIt's interpolation indeed. And yesh the results aren't anything to write home about. If it was Google that did this technique though, you would see a much more polished result.

Then again, artificial slow motion has only been effectively done by NVIDIA. And you still had nasty artefacts. If those multi-hundred Watts GPUs can barely manage it, forget phones!

And yup, we can thank Sony for this! It took Samsung a whole year to do that, but I think they needed a way to do that on their ISOCELL sensors without violating patents so that's why (because dual-sourcing everything except the design, then again with the colours available, you can say the only thing not dual-sourced is the name!)

Though just one thought. Sony rules at sensors and does solid cameras, I personally own a mirorless and it's awesome. Why didn't they do a phone with a variable aperture yet? After the efforts put in Super Slow Motion, carried from their premium full-frame Alpha line, you'd thibk they would already be at this point. It's not like it's particularily expensive either.

AnonD-558092, 21 Dec 2018Don't get too excited. As reported by XDA, companies like X... moreOr should I say, frame interpolation technique? Currently, the only ones able to do true 960fps Super Slow Mo thanks to its hardware are the IMX 345 found in the GALAXY S9/S9+ and the IMX 400 found in the XPERIA XZs and newer high-end flagships. Sure the HUAWEI P20/P20 PRO are the first HUAWEI smartphones to get 960fps Super Slow Mo, but using the frame interpolation technique makes it disgusting in my opinion

First of all apple used for the middle notch hidden in all advertisement . The round corner is just small add on . And Sony use 1gb of dram . That's 8 times more than you imply . I not sure you trying to defend apple with false information or you really don't know anything then simply type . It didn't work .

Shanti Dope, 21 Dec 2018Okay bro, honestly speaking, I was just being sarcastic in ... moreI get that the use case of this feature is rather limited (I have never found a worthy subject to capture, it really is it of very limited use outside of advertising).

Though one thing I don't get is why individuals are so trigger-happy to sue Apple for every single pretext and yet you don't see a lawsuit about this (Apple lawsuit about screen size not accounting for the rounded corners, you gotta be kidding seriously). Maybe being banned from the US at least has a good side, you are immune to those lawsuits.

As for the eDRAM, I think I read that it only uses 128MB of RAM for 960fps in Samsung and Sony phones. And you always see China OEMs pushing more RAM than ever. 128MB of RAM isn't what would make this phone more expensive. Unless eDRAM is costlier to implement in cameras.

(Though this is different from actual eDRAM as used by the Wii and Intel Iris graphics)

My Mate 20 as well, the choppiness is very obvious. But it doesnt affect me at all as i dont use them anyway. Maybe this View 20 will apply DRAM on the new IMX sensor? Maybe not, as its a flagship budget device.

If one appreciate the true 960fps so much, no doubt only Sony and Samsung are the choice.

This is just Huawei and Xiaomi cheaping out on their customers, but hey, who are we to judge?

As reported by XDA, companies like Xiaomi cheat on this "960fps". They actually record at 240fps and then extrapolate the missing frames. It gives... very mixed results.

Samsung and Sony don't need to do this because they have embedded RAM in the sensor. Though Super Slow Motion on the N8 and the S8 is actually SD at 480fps, still not cheating but you can see the difference.

I doubt the V20 will have an Amoled screen. I suppose it will be the same screen as the Nova 4 as this one is more expensive and only have an LCD screen and Kirin 970. Also it is written in the poster mentioning 960fps that the phone will have 48mp sensor. Rumors also say that the V20 will have only one camera instead of 3.

This is really great for capturing the fast-spinning blades of a helicopter or a drone!
