Light years behind the ones they use for themselves. Possibly not even S5 standard. My gf's S7 has a way better screen than the one in the Pixel 3xl. Feel free to go put them side by side, I have. I have also put my 950xl next to them. Seriously, my 950xl is 3 yrs old, and it has a slightly degraded screen, and it is still whiter.

Second: most use 12MP because their photos would look ugly at higher resolutions ( 16, 20, 25, 30, 40 MP). No matter if it comes from Google or Apple
Third: scale Pixel pics to 20MP and see how ugly they look.
Low res pic will always look prettier on a 20" screen, but shitty on a 4K 55" one...

I have a test object (white handmade door with painting marks i use to test cameras for detail resolving). As you said, nothing could beat 808 so far but having tested MANY cameras, XZ3 is next. Better than Lumia 950XL, for example, which had almost same results than Note 9, for example.

When will Google use Sony's Flagship IMX X00 series sensors (like 400, 500, 600) and teach Sony how to make proper camera algorithms?

Softwa... morenope. with the case of a sensor of same size, lower megapixel camera will give you a better picture cause the pixels are bigger and can collect more information. so a plain statement that 16 mp camera will have better photo is completely wrong. 16mp will just give a bigger photo.

I was looking at photos taken by iPhone XS on DxOMark and amazed by how sharp and detailed they are. Of course they are still behind likes of Nokia 808 or Lumia 1020, but for using a tiny smartphone sensor and plastic lens they are doing a really good job.
