what they need to do is get rid of that QR log in and use email and password. When ny phone dies and I need to access my messages on a desktop, how am I going to do that?

However, no, they are opting to make their own closed source OS. Google is rapidly fly dyinmg. The one thing that Android was clearly better than iOS (its semi open nature) is rapidly dying. Good riddance google, I hope a 3rd player arises.
