Typically, the American product is more widely known because of aggressive and pretentious advertising, but generally they also have lower quality. This is not a new thing, not for glass products or any other products.
And in any case, it is always difficult to beat Japanese quality, regardless of what the product or market is. They put the product first, profits second.
So let's stop pretending that Corning is the only company on the planet that can produce good glass for handheld devices. It was never true.

Love the Community, 03 Jan 2019Awtz, always stick to the creators of strengthened glass an... moreI guess your a yank, toughened glass was around a long time before corning even existed, as with most things america claims to have developed/discovered, it was usually done in Europe first, just that just as America complains now thachina ignores patent rights, well guess who they copied that trick from ?
Americas idea of history is somewhat different from most what actualy happened.
All of these "toughened" glass's are nonsense, there has been tough, scratch proof glass with decent optical qualities for many decades, try looking at what has been available for laboratory work for a very long time..

Love the Community, 03 Jan 2019Awtz, always stick to the creators of strengthened glass an... moreUsing that analogy, people should use Nokia since they are the most innovative cellphone manufacturer in the past era. Does people still it in 2012~2014? Not!
Competition makes manufacturers race on their quality and prices. Being the creator doesn't assure you future success. Innovation is not the only key on being success in the market. Pricing also carry a big factor in it.

Anonymous, 03 Jan 2019In terms of marketing? Yeah.In terms of quality , I think he means , to be fair most technically
Components from Japan are high standard , if anything there marketing is what let’s them down.. just look at Sony... most phones use there camera sensors.. yet other company’s market it and sell it better.. on other devices...

All the same. Gorilla glass.. monkey glass.. dinosaur glass ALL the same.
Just know the facts behind this tech.
The harder the glass to shatter, the weaker its ability to resist scratches.
The stronger its ability to scratch, the weaker the glass to resist shatter.
Good example, Gorilla glass 4 vs 5.
4 shatter easily when dropped.. but resist scratch better then 5.
5 resist drop better, but weak vs scratch.
For me, i prefer Gorilla glass 4. I do not drop my phone because careful, just need protection vs scratch. But most people.. just get screen protector.. so drop protection is more valuable.. so corning increase shatter strength.. but lower scratch strength.

I don't if this is just me or anyone has ever experienced this before, but whenever I try cleaning my phone with alcohol like once every month, I would get this sticky residue at the lower left of my phone which is impossible to get rid of. So, I don't like corning gorilla glass that much. Asahi glass is much better than Corning.
