BOE demos foldable display with impressively small bend radius

05 January 2019
Watch this OLED fold almost completely parallel to itself, thanks to a claimed world-best dynamic bending radius.

We can say thats a future. But now its too expensive so why to release such an expensive thing now.
Why if this technology exist they dont wait till the price will be affordable for anyone.
I believe even people who can afford it wont do it.

Fayth, 06 Jan 2019the screen still wrinkle when unbended... nopeI can see the screen bump. This is not good implementation at all. It is a total failure.

Now you can buy much cheaper TVs with that resolution. It will be the same with foldable screens. BTW, I don't think fordable in this way is way forward, they will eventually make a phone with a screen that rolls in and out. That will be better solution. But they aren't ready for that yet.

Oh look! What Sony did 12 years ago 😂🤣

lmao @ having nothes mean mainstream. so mainstream it coincidentally aligned with the worst phone market slump in years. people really LOVED the notches and all other shady schemes these phone manufacturers try to force on their customers huh?

Can folding tablet allow to format the full screen from 4:3 to 16:9? I need the foldable tablet with 16:9 or 16:10 so the movies are better.

Anonymous, 05 Jan 2019Bendable displays won’t last It literally the only thing that had to change for 10 years now.

Once again people being absolutely , catastrophically wrong.

Anonymous, 05 Jan 2019Bendable displays won’t last I beg to differ. IMHO in 2-3 years time tops it will be available. Not necessarily for the general masses, but say for the ones able to afford the 900-1000GBP (1200+$) phones each year

then, in 4 years down the road it will be just as mainstream as say having a notch

for those how say it won't be durable: look at what was possible/present say 6 years ago in the "rumour mill" (if it even existed) in gsmarena... compared to that how much we take for granted nowadays...

yes, it does put high tension/pressure on the folded side/points, but remember the old foldable calculators and foldable translator devices. They all died pretty soon around the hinges, and how many generation of clamshell devices lived through since zillion folds...

it was considered the weakest part of the device most prone to dieing, and many that time stayed away from it saying it "they won't ever!! as it will just mean a very soon servicing!!"...

people that time "all" sticked with the one-body devices, but despite all concerns, more and more devices appeared, perservered and remained ever since

personally i never was a fan of them, but to imagine say a foldable decent smarwatch or tablet/phone hybrid it would be foolish to say it would have no practical usability

it can still happen it will never mature beyond remaining a gimmick, however remembering how OLED and AMOLED started 6 years ago I think if anyone is to stumble upon the comment "not possible!!" later will be both just laughed at, and get forgotten, like all the other "there's no way this gonna work!!" comments that dissappeared over time...

A card size phone with roll-able or stretchable may be!!!
may be stretchable to tab size screen with mini projector !! all technologies are there we just need to arrange them..

The real question is how many times will it bend until it breaks?

The future of smartphone will be is foldable phones, really excited to see more and see how foldable phones will improve...

That device like ridiculously big, even when folded, so that defeats the purpose of a foldable. Failing right out the gate, IMO.

Anonymous, 05 Jan 2019So how about the jap's jdi screen? JDI still ain't producing any foldable displays AFAIK, but the first one who replied to you is truly an as*hol* and assumes that everything is fanboy-made.

There were no foldable books or paper notebooks or post cards through the years,
so foldable displays is just a very stupid idea !
May be more stupid is only foldable TV sets !
Why they don't try to make a tatoo with a laser beam
also on their brains , if they have any ?

Joe Dickson, 06 Jan 2019The bend looks closer to one inch than it does one millimeter.Well a bend RADIUS of 1cm, means that the the DIAMETER of the circle is 2cm. And depending on if they measure to the inside of the display and not the outside, we might need to add twice the thickness of the display for the outer diameter.
And the outer diameter will be the minimum thickness...

So might not be that impressive after all - though any improvement is welcomed.
