And yes, I kinda agree with he justification of one powerful core at the same power plane when he puts it that way. But he does say they did it so that the chip could be cheaper. So, if it had 3 clusters at different voltages each, it would have been more complex, but would also have had been better and more efficient. Like Huawei did, and probably even Samsung would do. It's still to be tested in real life circumstances, so I'd reserve judgement. But to me, it still kind of seems like the prime core is just for a boost, and how the boost is sustained would decide how useful in real life it is.

Thanks though.

And the fact that the presentation didn't contain any efficiency improvement figures makes me doubt them even more. They won't go too overboard just for benchmarks is assured, but it has had me wondering nevertheless.

Anonymous, 08 Jan 2019Why the single core of Qualcomm is always lower in Geekbenc... moreBy design. Qualcomm is clever enough not to overpower and keep everything as efficient as possible. They don't after a single value, but a rational one (e.g. performance per watt, performance per dollar, performance per nanometer square, etc.). Fact is, you can use your phone smoothly on SD660 powered phone, especially if it's equipped with UFS 2.X storage (it's slower with eMMC 5.1, but not very significant). So why aftering something that won't be useful most of the time? In a recent interview, Qualcomm's product manager describes the daily and realistic scenario that SD855 is trying to fulfill better so you get real world performance that's better than just benchmark scores. If you're techie enough, the reasoning is easy to understand and make a whole lot sense than just getting highest single core benchmark score.

Nobody has found a proof, that's why.

Thinking that Apple cheats just because is close source is misleading; the cheat occurs on the app not the system, and you can check the app, even sideloading one with different names and signed by some else just like they did when they caughted Huawei and Oppo.

All that year, only to barely compete with Qualcomm's SoC, and a GPU that doesn't even beat it completely.
Overheating? Well, Qualcomm chipsets since SD820 never experience them anymore.

Anonymous, 08 Jan 2019Why the single core of Qualcomm is always lower in Geekbenc... moreBecause Qualcomm uses ARM-based core designs, which are all significantly slower than Apple's counterpart designs.
That's why Samsung's in-house designed Exynos chips have superior single core performance because they got only a few cues from ARM and heavily constructed their own from scratch. Now if the Exynos 9820 was just paired with Qualcomm's Adreno 640, then we might finally see a close competitor to Apple A12 Bionic, but then Apple would release the A13 before this year ends, and continue to dominate once again and be 2 years ahead of Android chipsets.
