Having Redmi as a sub-brand will allow it to release its own flagship(s) with Snapdragon 855 for example.

Like how Honor has the View 20 with Kirin 980.

Absolutely! :D Get paid for the gimmick having a brand as a subsidiary. Well, sub division and branding are done for balancing taxation of the home company and the subsidiary so the two companies standalone in the stock market each having individual entities with individual prices of their shares. Trade Offs...

It may or may not have something to do with a true meaning of the Red Mi - Red Rice.
There is not many people who buy phones driven by politics of country who made that product, but China is avoiding red color on all their export products except millitary for a good reason.

Don't understand the need for sub-branding. Xiaomi is a known name. Their range like Poco, Redmi, Mi seems perfectly acceptable names for different models at different pricepoints. Imagine Mercedes releasing a separate sub-brands and logos for the C-class, E-class, CLA-class and so on and so forth.

People who'd buy a Redmi would buy it irrespective of whether it's branded Xiaomi or Redmi by Xiaomi. I'd like to be the guy in the company who gets paid to come up with such superfluous marketing and branding strategies.

Hmm... kinda boring, looks more like a label than a logo.

They should hire a better designer

What would have suited their value for money phones more is if they should have waited for their Redmi 8 series with a notchless or punch-holeless front screen design (I said front to distinguish the wannabe trending dual display phone designs which, uhhh, do have a screen on the rear or whichever side they call as rear) such that the Redmi brand would have represented aggressively affordable modernly designed phones. Why 8? Ever heard of superstition? They're strongly enamored by it to the point that it seems as if they're excessively obsessed (not dedicated) by it
