Nokia 8.1 Plus renders show a punch hole camera on a 6.2" display

09 January 2019
That's the same size as the Nokia 8.1 display, so why the "Plus"?

If this phone was a 4000+mha battery and splash resistance im buying it

Dan, 12 Jan 2019https://www.androidauthority.com/knew-reviving-nokia-costs-... moreWhich is a ridiculous thing to read into after they also claim "FIH owns a small minority in HMD as well".

A small minority shareholder has no say in the running of a company, and is DEFINITELY NOT behind the wheel.

Dan, 12 Jan 2019Of course it is. Here is the official version: http://ww... moreHMD do their own designs. Or do you also think Tiger Woods is not really doing the golfing because his caddie is giving him input? A surgeon isn't really operating because a nurse is assisting? A home designer isn't actually designing homes because they communicate with companies about what products are available?

You seem to be under this grand delusion that HMD isn't even running THEIR OWN COMPANY.

And yeah, of course Foxconn lost money in Europe. Among other things, they've bought the feature phone business from Microsoft.

Here is an Android Authority article reporting on Foxconn and Nokia.

        Their conclusion:

"But with the tenacious Terry Gou at the helm, there is nothing conservative in the approach being taken to Nokia. With Foxconn behind the wheel, HMD will only see the revenue rise as a win, with profits to come later."

RNG, 11 Jan 2019Are you sure this is the real excerpt? I have found an ... moreOf course it is. Here is the official version:

          p.13

What I quoted is right below your quote, in the same paragraph. I was responding to another poster's insistence that HMD does all its own designs.

No they don't. It's a collaboration effort with Foxconn. The ODM (Foxconn) would originate the design and match it with sourced components, and come up with an estimated cost base. Typically a few proposed solutions would be presented, and one would be chosen by HMD, possibly with some tweaks, and the process iterates.

Does HMD have input in design? Sure. However, you can see Foxconn does most of the groundwork. Design does not occur in a vaccuum. It has to be lined up with component availability and cost, supplier logistics and key business metrics such as gross margin requirements.

In 2017, Foxconn lost over 160 million USD in Europe alone due to Nokia-branded phones. This alone tells you how deeply involved they are in the joint venture.

They do NOT design the products. If HMD (or any other Foxconn customer) says they want a certain design, Foxconn can give early input about the feasibility and options for the manufacturing of the desired design.

I have found an excerpt, too. Fihmb.com : "Since 2017, with the roll-out of logistics and distribution business ancillary to manufacturing of the Nokia-branded phones, the Group has been distributing feature phones and smart phones to customers and consumers worldwide, particularly through its operations in Vietnam, India and Finland respectively."

Plus, on the back of my phones (Nokia 8 and Nokia 3) it says they are Designed by HMD Global Oy not by Foxconn or Fihmobile.

That's a ... moreUnlike iPhones, Foxconn not only manufactures Nokia-branded phones, but also designs them, sources components, manages supply chain and logistics, and distributes the products. Hon Hai/Foxconn's footprint is far larger with HMD than it is with AAPL.

As I said before, this is a GOOD thing in this day and age. Without Foxconn heavily in the mix, Nokia-branded phones would not be competitive.

Personally I don't care whether a company is Chinese, Finnish or Martian, I care about product quality, value and creativity. As an investor I care about ROI and management track record, and Gou's track record is far better than ex-Nokia executives who took what was the #1 cellphone brand in the world to ruin.

That's a good 3 years before HMD even existed. And I'm not sure why you bring up a Taiwanese director with seemingly zero ties to Foxconn.

Do you have a source that Foxconn own even a part of HMD Global? The founder and main investor of HMD Global has been Swiss-based Ginko Ventures, run by the former Nokia senior VP Jean-Francois Baril.

You also seem to forget that Apple, Microsoft, Sony, etc, also use Foxconn. Are they all half-Chinese suddenly? Is that the only way to manufacture at Foxconn?

And of course Sam Chin knows Terry Gou. Sam Chin was the CEO of Terry Gou's company for 9 years. It'd be a travesty if they didn't know each other.

Back then, they were the kings, and everybody followed. They had money, experience, research and fame. HMD today is nowhere near that. HMD today needs to keep up with the trend if they want to survive. It is as it is. Nokia today is not that powerfull as it was, and does not have those money they had, even so, i am verry happy with my nokia 8. As happy as i was with it's grandfather: the mighty N8, or the great smartphone and my first one Nokia 3650 , or or or., sadly people have no idea what a device is. The most important thing is, to have a notch or whatever. For the moment HMD needs time, to get back to real money making, and back to research and innovation. When they get there and they make money enough to be on a verry good place, i am pretty sure Nokia will take them over. After all HMD is nothing else but a side company made to test watters, and not killing Nokia ,as a company, if it fails.
