Imagine that if Sony didn't create this IMX586, then 2019 mid rangers would still be weak at cameras.

The problem with mid rangers is that their cameras are typically underwhelming to decent, mainly because of the poor choice of camera sensor and other hardware components, as well as weak software implementation.
The latter can now be easily fixed by porting the Google Camera app on every Android phone, but the hardware problem still lives, and this is what the new sensor tries to fix.
Now Google have just fooled themselves for using the same exact camera module as last year's Pixel 2 series, because any mid ranger with this sensor plus Google Camera software would easily destroy Pixel phones in overall image quality, regardless of the weaker DSP and ISP of the chipset.
