Samsung SVP explains why foldable phones will bring in the next wave of innovation

There's talk that smartphone innovation has slowed down and people are sticking to older devices. Foldable screens can change that.

        The smartphone industry is dead or close to it, nothing but one gimmick after another whether it's foldable/rollable/stretchable screens, mechanical pop up/sliding cameras, UD fingerprint scanners, AI/AR, obtrusive notches, face unlock and the list goes on. Sales and profit will continue to diminish unless we start seeing some real innovation or lower prices.

            Hi is in big mistake. They wont. It is gonna be the same like with 3D Tvs. Everybody will forget. Nobody needs 2 in 1 smartphone and tablet. Just simple its better use it separate.

I think that taking your phone out of your pocked and extending the screen would be a lot more convenient.

                        travis999, 16 Jan 2019I can see a lot of folk commenting here going to be disappo... moreyou are looking at a few success that happened with 'innovation' Large screen phones were laughed at launch (especially that sqaure note) and Apple ridicules stylus. Note is still only major handset with built in stylus at this point.

                        Palm (and its Palm OS with it) was a massive failure although currently you can see its Web OS designs and 'cards' for multitasking has carried over to both Android and iOS.

                        3D screens and cameras were absolutely 'the best' tech that people tried to utilise, only now nowhere to be seen (even among TVs now)

                        What about 'force touch' or similar tech around it? under utilised is what I can say about it.

                        4K displays? That was a gimmick that no one outside Sony used, with now most phone dont go beyond 2K (or QHD).

                        outside smartphone, you had 'curved' displays which again fizzled, and high refresh rate monitors are very much niche (really just limited to FPS gaming on mid-high end desktops)

                        Currently best innovation that can happen in smartphone is larger battery capacity (which is still not available due to technological limits we have), not a flexible screen. Flexible does not mean you can actually fold in half, with 0 gaps between screen at the moment. Even if you could, you don't have to imagine the issue with durability on it. (try with steel sheet. bend it completely few hundred times and you can literally rip it with your hands)

                        Either way, one of us is going to be right, but I highly doubt on the future of this so called 'innovation'

                          I have Nice compact phone and 10 inch Chromebook (touch) in my bag if I need a bigger screen.

However, foldable phones would surely have issues that would be hard to fix. Especially for the repair cost and the battery capacity + design.

                                I can see a lot of folk commenting here going to be disappointed and then have to eat their own words in a fairly short time, ahh well, if you don't want a fablet, simply don't buy one, I and loads of others will wait a year, for 2nd,3rd,4th generation folding displays and the cheaper and cheaper device that will be built with them, of course the 1st gen will be pricey, new stuff always is, my first HTC HD 2 cost a fortune, especially for those days, but then it was the first available phone with big screen And snapdragon 1ghz cpu, the Toshiba t1 was out earlier but a complete piece of junk, but then it was Toshiba so I expected it to be rubbish, I wasn't wrong, my first HD2 was nearly £600 to buy outright, but was worth every penny, still the best device I've owned yet. There are already 3 Foldable screen fablets ready for market, all pricey, but in a years time almost everyone will be making models available, and will begin to dominate the market for quite a few years, we will see in 4-5 years time, but I'll have my "I told you so" t-shirt ready to rub a few faces in the dirt with, just because an innovation doesn't appeal to you, or you don't understand the physics and tech involved, doesn't mean the majority of the device buying public agree with you, so get ready to eat humble pie, yep, the Samsung will be iffy, pricey and not sell in vast numbers, but others will rapidly improve the tech and lower the price, that's when most of us will buy our first fablet..

                                  foldable phones will NEVER be the future. The future is allready here it's the smartphone. Anything with minimum 4G Of RAM and a good camera etc is the future. That's why people don't want to spend more for a much better phone that does the same is some milliseconds faster... The market os oversaturated and will remain like this for years...

                                    Guys, just give them a fair chance for god's sake.
                                    Why do people hate on Samsung for absolutely no reason?
                                    Let's just see what they have to offer. In a leak earlier, pricing was leaked to be around 1300$. Just think about the R&D costs and compare it to the already similarly priced XS Max(which is not a new product).
                                    Criticize all you want after seeing the product.
