Apple replaced 11 million batteries last year

16 January 2019
That might be part of the explanation for the missed revenue targets.

Apple cost too much so replacing battery is a lot cheaper option than buying a new phone for 1000+.

replaced batteries are not the real problem, The no-Innovation, and price tag is the real culprit. No-one wants to pay hefty price-tag for same specs iphone, Period.

So what is being suggested here, is that they ended up shooting themselves in the foot?

Let's not kid ourselves and lie about Apple's motives. They offered a $2.9 battery replacement for $29, and made themselves look good at the same time, because normally they charge the customer $299 or whatever for it.

Anonymous, 16 Jan 2019"After Apple admitted that it's slowing down older iPhones ... more"Older" phones mean phones with used battery cycles. Meaning if the max charge is less than 80% the cpu is throttled to still last "all day". It 100% does make older phones faster.

More like overpriced battery replacement program from Apple, when you can buy battery replacement kits for like half price or even less from reputable sources like iFixit and do it yourself.

Anonymous, 16 Jan 2019"After Apple admitted that it's slowing down older iPhones ... moreOf course it will! When a battery gets old, the current and voltage supplied to the CPU is decreased, slowing the performance. When you replace it with a new battery, the voltage goes back up, and its like buying a new device :) An Apple A9 SOC is enough for everything you might want to do on an iPhone with such a closed OS :D

Replacement battery must come back with waterproofing but we can sacrifice size for that. There could be universal cases standards could be developed like USB-C port which gets adopted by all so that Mobile OEM makers could offer compatible shells with internals with minimal battery or no battery. Even if it is slightly smaller battery it's should be ok I think.
