Huawei Mate 20 Pro's AI finishes a symphony from two centuries ago

29 January 2019
The dual NPU of the Kirin 980 wrote the melody for the final two movements of Schubert's Symphony No. 8 that has been unfinished for 197 years.

This is just a PR stunt, nothing of a musical value.

Composers do sometimes reintroduce themes from previous movements, but different movements have different themes, that’s why they are two different movements. Two different movements from a same symphony is just as related to each other as two songs from a same album. Basically, this is like feeding AI “We Will Rock You” and expecting “The Bohemian Rhapsody” to come out from the other end.

The beauty on the pic interests me much more than a symphony :-)

And this could not have been done with any old other computer, because? This is such a ridiculous gimmick. I can't take it seriously.

How about we stop with the pointless criticism and appreciate that we're about to witness a centuries old musical symphony being completed?

As someone who likes music, i certainly am intrigued & anxious to listen to it.

Do you really think a tiny block in a small phone chip creates complex AI algorithms? No, all the work is done on massive servers with the supervision of AI experts. These NPUs (such a misleading term) simply take the already created algorithms and apply them to the content they are processing. Without algorithms they cannot process anything.

Do you think A.I. can predict music? or can create music? maybe if there is a pattern... but not from scratch.

and this.... here... i call it nonsense.

Let's not whine around and be criticising, rather finish the symphony ourselves then. Oh wait, it's been 197 years. Huawei thought of it, did something about it and we didn't. End of story.

That's why it cant identify all objects on photographs if that info is not previously loaded into them. Its code after all, an npu just make it faster.

NPU works by analyzing the pattern because that is what music is - a pattern of sounds.. Now once the NPU works out the pattern for this score it can finish the unfinished notes by adding new notes according to the pattern it already developed thus creating a continuous and harmonious melody called music.. In reality any powerful computer can achieve this task.. But to achieve it using just a phone SoC is a breaking feat
