Canalys: Apple ships fewer iPhones in 2018, Samsung misses targets too

30 January 2019
Q4 was contentious as both giants lost ground, however Huawei shot up 47%. Xiaomi had a poor Q4, but solid full year performance.

Samsung's 2018 line-up of middle range phones was crap, while Chineese brands offered lots of alternative. I really hope Samsung will come up with some decent phones in the middle range this year, or they'll be the next HTC/Sony/etc. very soon...

More Huawei and other Chinese brands sales doesn't necessarily mean that people don't like iPhones any longer. It may mean that the economy goes down and people buy cheaper phones. If Apple introduces a cheaper iPhone for some crucial markets like China and India it will take back all the lost sales from the Chinese brands. People in China and in most of Asia are very brand conscious, if money is not the issue they will go with what is considered to be the best... the iPhone.

              Phones sales are slowing down.

Silly companies will stick to phone as their bread winner.

Company with foresight will move to enforce their other products.

Apple currently seems to be putting all their eggs into iPhones.. Destroying their Mac.. no Mac Pros.. no support for nivida egpu.. that does not bold well for them.

Anonymous, 31 Jan 2019China yes. India No. Apple is non existent in India and n... moreThere is no special tax that apple has to pay compared to other manufacturers with similar presence. Import duty is same for every brand. Having no assembly or manufacturing unit in India makes them pay 12.5 % customs duty plus it also doesn't allow them to sell their phones via direct distribution (online sale through Apple.com or their own Retail stores). There is no reason why Samsung can sell their phones at the same or slightly less price than USA price (Note 9 base model retails at ~952$ including tax, which is less than US price of 1000$ + tax) and Apple can't, other than Apple hasn't shown same interest in Indian market that Samsung has with their manufacturing unit in India which arguably is largest mobile manufacturing factory in the world to quote their own words.

                https://news.samsung.com/in/samsung-inaugurates-worlds-largest-mobile-factory-in-india

No third party retailer is gonna take a hit to their own margins whether they sell Apple or Samsung product, the effort to balance the price has to come from manufacturer. So it's totally Apple's fault that they are failing in India.

Its a good time to say them good bye.
People advanced like technology and clever ones know paying a lot more for nothing extra compared to other much cheaper competitors is like tossing money out of windows.
I am glad companies like Xiaomi are on the ride while others are send to last track.

Though the hardware is made by Chinese, the underlying OS, Services etc...heavily relying upon Google Android OS which by itself is taking tons of user data with permission, what else worse Chinese OEMs can do for the users who will be sitting in many parts of the world? I think we sort of fantasizing too much on this Chinese legend beyond industrial espionage where they merely steel IPs and try to replicate the process to make it cheaper, though they are becoming efficient in many areas certainly, yet, they are far behind in many areas that require them to become Google....their primary concerns are political unrest through social media, economic growth, job opportunities for billions of chinese etc...

Apple is non existent in India and never will be. Plus there is a special tax in india for apple because it is made in China. So speak to the Indian government, not apple.

Apple sells the phone for the same price everywhere in the world. If a country puts additional taxes or your stores sell at arbitrary prices I don’t think apple can do much. It’s not their fault.

I am worried about all the Chinese phones topping the list. Chinese companies are famous for stealing data and making money through illicit means. There is a reason why many of the Chinese phones costs less that Samsung or Sony.

I'm more into video games again than I am with mobile.

                                  2019-????: video games

There is just nothing exciting with mobile. Maybe the foldables will be cool but that will a few years of refinements. I don't even bother watching those tech YouTubers anymore. Tech hipsters.

We're just buying stuff we don't really need because we're bored. At least with gaming, you can use a video game console for a decade if you take care of it well. My PS3 phat works great. I'm surprised the controllers can still hold a charge.

PlayStation might be my favorite product line of all-time. I've owned all of them and never feel disappointed. With phones, it's kinda hit or miss.

With Innovation Slowing down, and Me Too copycats selling products at half the price, Apple and Samsung will get beaten.

Way to survive is to bring some new innovation, with every release of product. Otherwise these brands are doomed just like Nokia and Blackberry

Once the trust is lost, it is lost forever. The brand loyalty is difficult to build but now TC is showing how easy it can be broken. He can show colourful quarterly earning reports to the investors and the retail investor market who have no clue on many things but eventually, the drop in revenue will kick in at some point and when you look at the data going back, the horror show would have long happened and invested deep into the stocks! Apple and its investors would abandon the ship very quickly....but it may not happen in 2 years for sure.
