Ryan, 25 Feb 2019Clearly a GENERATION ahead of Samsung design. Looks goodI don't see how it is a generation ahead. It looks clumsy. Samsung one you can see it's a premium device. It looks elegant to hold and opens like a book. Whereas this one is prone to scratches with screens all outwardly constructed. It looks plastic. I would rather have something well constructed and elegant than put every latest attempt trend on a phone. Think guys. You are spending money on these things i dont wanna look like a 5 year old plastic toy with screens.

Anonymous, 24 Feb 2019Huawei outclassed samsung so quick, samsung literally had l... moreYou mean a plastic screen over a glass display?
The big crease in the middle of the display.

No one can do or will do screens better then Samsungs.

The only company with truly amazing tech are Samsungs.

And guess what its $600 cheaper an alot more sturdier.

Huawei's version looks better but Samsungs one is more durable and looks like it will last and the price is alot less. If the Huawei Mate X has a 8 Inch display they should have had at least 5000mah battery.

I would buy the Galaxy Fold and buy the S10e.

            Personally Samsung definetly nailed it.

"Because of technical barriers to develop an in-folding screen, Huawei may have opted for the outward-folding design, according to the industry official.

Since Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, is the only company that has the expertise and high yields to produce in-folding displays, no other company will be able to launch in-folding foldable devices for a while,” the official said."

BOE Technology Group and LG Display are some of the other flexible OLED panel makers for smartphones, but their yield rates are said to be far from satisfactory. BOE has reportedly supplied foldable screens for Huawei.

Mate X’s outward-folding design also leaves the device always at risk of getting scratches.

“Since colorless polyimide, a flexible film used for a foldable smartphone screen, is not as hard as a smartphone screen made of a glass panel, an outward-folding device is more exposed to scratches than in-folding ones,” a market watcher said.

Seems like Samsung hit the nail on the head ;)
So Samsung haters keep crying and being salty.

The Galaxy Fold front screen is just an alternative and that's why it's small. The main screen is inside so that it won't get scratched easily. Btw, I've read so many BS comments about the Galaxy Fold having an engineering failure. Nobody reviewed the phone yet and that's why we should ignore those comments typed by keyboard warriors

Take a careful look at the following video to see Huawei Mate X in action in close up. The commentary offered by the reviewer is spot-on:
                    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bq991Q43pkw

I have carefully watched this video and I haven't seen any hard crease line(s) on the OLED screen. Yes, there are soft creases, but no hard-crease line(s).

Samsung design is super wasteful. Extra screens, extra cameras (three different locations!).

Huawei's iteration actually even reduced camera locations. Placed one excellent camera, and can be used for both normal and selfie mode because screen is on both sides, and only ONE screen.

This is how you design with efficiency.

The basic premise of a foldable device with OLED screen is this: The OLED screen is so flexible that you can bend it and role it, and when it is fully open it can return to its original unblemished state.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold has failed to deliver on that premise. The fact remains that the OLED screen is not creasable in the sense that the OLED screen can't return to its original unblemished state once it is creased. The Samsung designers have failed to understand this basic limitation of OLED.

What a failure on the part of Samsung! Considering that Samsung is the principle flag-bearer of OLED display technology. Considering that the talk about a foldable device started as early as 2014, and it was followed up with years of resources and engineering effort. Considering the prestige Samsung has attached to such a high profile project. This is not just another failure, it is a failure on a "spectacular" scale!

Anonymous, 25 Feb 2019LOL Man, I like the Huawei design more than Samsung g but ... moreThere are plenty of videos out there showing the front of Huawei Mate X in action in close-up, I have carefully watched those videos and I don't see any hard-crease line. The folding-out (Huawei Mate X) only creates a soft-crease which is fully recoverable and without any hard-crease line.

The folding-in (Samsung Fold) does create a hard-crease with a visible and unrecoverable hard-crease line. See the following video:
                          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS9CWfLg1zg

Play this video with slow-motion (0.25 of full speed), at around 0:51 you will see a very clear hard crease line in the middle.

Do you really want to use a 7.3" tablet with a damaged AMOLED screen (with a visible hard-crease line in the middle)?

Not exactly that easy. It took Huawei 3 years.

This is certainly better looking than Samsung. However, the price is a shocker! reason being that Samsung version has multiple screens and seven different cameras. The hardware costs are bound to go up. In this version, I like that they made use of a single screen and just 3 (or is it 4) cameras. So in theory, it should have been cheaper. Even more so considering that Huawei is using its own chipset.
Anyways, I also believe that these first generation devices are more like a proof-of-concept rather than being 'mass-devices' They will become mass devices only in third or fourth versions, so I will keep a tab of all that is being introduced now, but will practically look to buy a foldable device only after 2-3 years

2019 might be the first year in awhile when I'm actually excited with mobile and where it could be headed.

2017 and 2018 were boring years. I really didn't care for tech at all. We kept losing features instead of gaining newer ones.

Best comparison so far between Fold vs Mate X -
                                  https://youtu.be/MjruV06EoaA

I personally prefer the Fold's narrowness but prefer the innie folding concept of the Mate X. Just wished it was way cheaper and smaller. Still quite large when folded.

Neither one will be my phones at all. I'll wait on Gen 3. Even Gen 2 still will have its rough edges. Remember how bad the display was for the Pixel 2 before improving it immensely with the Pixel 3?

Third time is usually the charm. Hopefully, the prices plummeted alot like it did with flat screen TVs.

And you can buy a galaxy s10 and an iPad pro still save money.

If I'm spending the 2000 I'll add 600 and take the mate because clearly it gives a full tablet and a bigger screen and better looking in one hand mode.
Which would be the mode people will use the most.
