Weekly poll: what's the best design for foldable phones?

03 March 2019
They can fold with the screen in, fold and leave it out or some variation on those two options. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Seeing the poll results, I cant help but wonder if all the iSheep have just become sSheep. How anyone can think that the two design types are even comparable is beyond me. The inward fold leaves a smaller radial fold result in great stress on the fold. This will inevitably result in a far more prominent crease. Regarding damage to the outer screen, it seems just as likely to me that damage will occur due to dust and buts getting stuck between the two screens. As I said before, it is beyond me that there is any debate about this. The Huawei Mate X looks like a phone fit for the future, the Samsung does not. The Fold is comparable to phones I owned 20 years ago. You could never bring yourself to use it as a folded device because the screen to body ratio is horrible and if you are simply going to use it unfolded, buy yourself a table and save a lot of money.

Huawei style exemplifies the reasons why you want a foldable phone. Samsung just gives you phone that can fold.

Huawei's design is better than Samsung because no notch. The protrusion at its back also acts as a handle, it's hard to handle without it because bigger screens with non-existent side bezels were already hard to hold.

Anonymous, 03 Mar 2019It looks better but it's worst when you actually use it. Da... moreNo i dont think so.
Actualy Samsung is one i hate.
When unfolded you have a many camers tablet when folded you get a brick which can ahrdly be put into pockets.
Huawei did a lot beter and more user friendly device.

Actually Huawei Mate X copied Oppo Foldable Phone.... :)

Achillias, 03 Mar 2019It's not that hard to produce one. A new screenprotector ju... moreReally? How???

The results are hilarious to put it politely.
The screens on bendable phones are not made of Glass but a Soft Plastic, because glass doesn't bend in the sharp bends required for foldable screens. Therefore the screens to need to have 2 fundamental qualities:
              1. They should be protected from scratches and dents when not in use.
              2. Their bending mechanism shouldn't make the screen vulnerable to very sharp bends (bends should be as far away from 360° as possible).

Samsung is the ONLY smartphone maker who has addressed these 2 fundamental issues.
While I agree that the Huawei X has a better visually pleasing design, and I also like the larger screen on it too, it is destined for a very short life. Also considering it has way fewer cameras, less refined body, and a single screen instead of 2, it should be atleast $300 cheaper than Samsung's offering.
The same is rhe case with Xiaomi's design. It creates a huge screen, but it too bends outwards and thus way more susceptible to damage and ageing.

I only wish Samsung had considered 2 option in terms if design:
              1. Larger screen when the screen is opened.
              2. The opened screen design should have been more symmetrical (I am not a fan of the inside notch due to the cameras).

i guess we will have to live with these crease for the next few years because of lack of material for the screen that permits both elasticity, shape retention, self-healing, and transparency all at the same time.

it's about solutions and samsung did it

I think HMD will rebirth nokia communicator with foldable display

Its a pity there is no "none" option. I don't like either of these designs, to be honest. I like how Samsung hides the screen in closed state but who in the world needs an external screen in a folded device? Certainly not me. Next concern in locking mechanism - will it fold as I try to use it?

I chose Huawei variant because it shouldn't fold in my arms as I try to use it, unlike samsung. But I'd prefer Samsung-style folding.

                      Xiaomi's dual fold seems unnecessary.

I'd pick vertical fold if it had 4:3 screen ratio when unfolded. But that would make the device extremely long and narrow, making it hard to carry around.

Either way, I want neither of these big bulky items in my pocket. If I want a tablet, I'll buy a tablet.

Whats the point of a foldable phone if its still a 6 inch brick? Fold down wins. You get the big screen you like, while having a smaller form factor for your pocket.

Very confuse pooling. Fold in is good, but not thick like Samsung S Fold (should called Stack instead) and there have gap in between. How can I choose fold in but doesn't meant to Samsung S Fold?

Waiting for Sony to make their foldables. Japan the land of origami should know how to make foldables better than the rest of the world.

fold in protects the easily scratched plastic screen
fold out still leaves screen crease when opened

Seems like the votes are in favour for fold in. Which i concur for now.

This is still very new tech. The flexible screen can't integrate much features into it. It cannot embed bio metric scanner, camera, speakers or wireless charging.

So if they use fold inwards, they can still allow camera / speakers / wireless charging on the outside, with the downside of having yet another screen.

In the future, when the tech matures, i believe fold outwards is better. Screen gets more durable, you save one screen, all bezels-less design. Integrate all the other components into the screen.

I will go for the motorola, compact and classic flip up, still own the original v3. If the samsung fold got the pen like note, it will definitely be my first choice.

The fold in is obvious better, BUT the mate x is way way better, more beautifull and usefull than the samsung's version
