Weekly poll: what's the best design for foldable phones?

03 March 2019
They can fold with the screen in, fold and leave it out or some variation on those two options. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Sort by:

We are voting among the least bad available designs...

The best would be a three part device roughly 16:9, folded and unfolded, that could fold like a Z to phone size. AND could also close in on itself like an "e" to fully protect the scratch prone flexible screen.

But that is at the least a year or two away I guess..

Unfortunately there are no known materials that are hard to scratches an can bend flexibly sharply, so a pure Z solution has the same problem as the outside folding ones with the exposed part.

SohailSays, 03 Mar 2019But that doesn't serve the whole purpose of "foldable phone... moreBut the Motorola variant can be folded making it very compact instead of having a large device in the pocket. That's what makes most sense for me, I don't need to unfold a device to make it a tablet. I need a large screen device making it compact.

Woted for Motorola but from those which are available at the moment Mate X looks billions times better than Crapsung.

Fold in is the obvious choice in real life usage. Fold out looks great on promo photos, but will break in a week in real life.
Fold in, old Razr style, could make of a super compact 6" phone, too. Folded into a little box with a notifications feature on the shell.

            Xiami's doesn't make any sense.
Folded or not it still looks like a tablet.
            Whats the point.

              Neither
              This is useless expensive stuff

I think fold out its the best idea of an foldable phone. But an fold in isnt bad either. The dual fold will have a problem in taking photos when is small.

Too many Samsung fanboys rendering the poll's results irrelevant.

That being said, I don't even care about the way the phone folds as long as it's designed to unfold from a small phone to a larger one, not already a large phone into a tablet. Mate X is too large, Samsung is too thick. Hopefully Motorola won't screw up and will make it a reasonable size.

The Huawei Mate X design for sure. It's only needs a foldable screen protector and that screen is save from scratches.

Fold in and vertical but something like dual fold and RAZR fold combo would be interesting, fold two sides and tablet becomes phone than vertical fold and make it pocketable

Fold In (but better executed than Galaxy Fold) and Vertical.

Very difficult to say one way or the other without seeing in real and deep.....Design may be good from outside but there are unknowns like the crease, foldable screen life, case, screen guard etc...

I am kind of split between fold in and fold out. Dual fold is straight up bs. Vertical fold is interesting, but I consider it to be rather niche, even though a Motorola RAZR with that would be dope. I feel like fold out is the more sensible one, because you can use one screen and one camera as a normal screen with front camera, a screen with back camera and 2 screens and still have a back camera. It's downside is that fat bar on the side. With fold in, you need more cameras and screens to achieve the same thing, though the end result seems both more durable and beautiful. Maybe a company other than Huawei can improve the fold out concept, because more screens and cameras always mean higher cost.

A foldable phone should be vertical in size and when unfolded, it should open like a book.
                                Razr doesn't make sense.

folding in is something we all know and we use in our daily life like books and wallet, its the right way to fold but I still picked mate X, because although it not as solid and practical as galaxy fold but at least its trying something new and interesting

None, they all suck with their plastic screens and creases. This whole foldable/flexible/bendable display fad is a massive gimmick.

I don't think there's a right or a wrong design. They all have advantages & disadvantages of their own. In the end, it's upto the customer's preferences.

No matter which design you look at, there's a lot of room for improvement, specially regarding that crease.
