Suppose they do a deal with one manufacturer to build development platforms just for them. Who else would buy from them?
Sony has consistently made phones which push the technology (4k screens for instance) so they can develop their cameras on bleeding edge hardware.
All the other phone camera makers have their own phones.

NSO, 08 Mar 2019My recommendation to SONY that they have to shut down mobil... moreNot everyone likes heavy skins. You may find the extra software useful on your Samsung, but to me there's a lot of bloatware so I prefer lighter skins like Sony or OnePlus. Heavy skins also take more time to update, which is why Samsung are one of the last. Even if I don't buy the Xperia 1, I'm glad they're not copying everyone and adding a notch or a hole.

More than 70% of the content on netflix is 21:9.
Amazon has many 21:9 stuff too...
Then next year many phones start to come 21:9, the haters will say it is great for split screen, videos etc ....

Mike, 08 Mar 2019I'm glad you have Sony devices but you don't have the best ... moreFor sure I didn't bought S8 because ONE UI. the S8 is with me since 2 years ago and the Android 9 with ONE UI is just received 2 weeks ago on my device. But to be honest, once I switched from my SONY XZ to SAM S8 I found a lot of software improvements features. My XZ received Android 8 before S8 but in my opinion the S8 still gives more features and better experience. For the devices you mentioned I think I didn't like it design, it looks more like HTC not SONY and by the way they almost stop phones in my region ( Middle East ) as the XZ2 is the last device here!!. However, I really hope for SONY to back on track but I know they won't till they start rise their heads and take a look around to the real world.

NSO, 08 Mar 2019My recommendation to SONY that they have to shut down mobil... moreI'm glad you have Sony devices but you don't have the best ever Sony devices such as XZ Premium, XZ2 Compact or XZ3. Then you would have known that software modifications are pretty deep and pretty convincing. I'm also skeptical that you bought S8 because of ONE UI :) Btw ONE UI is pretty good and the first ever Samsung modification that actually works. I like it a lot.
IMO both Samsung and Sony are the last remaining premium Android manufacturers. Both have premium build like Apple and unlike any other Android brand.

congrats for not being one of those who knows what he/she is buying... im a lowkey Sony fanboy using a z1c and z5p mocked by some other brand's users because its old, has "large" bezel, blah blah... but when their phone lags, hardware begins to deteriorate like burning screens, "signs" of usage i start laughing at them... especially when some of them argue that they bought cheaper priced phones and think they saved a lot of money for a phone... but guess what, they change their phones about a year and i am using an "expensive" phone for i dont know how long... z5p was released when? how about z1c? so yeah, as long as xperia exists, i wont settle for any other brands...
and btw, no matter what you say, other fanboys will highlight xperia's weakness...because its not perfect... while defending their favorite brands... so im not sure if telling them how xperia is better, will have an effect to them...

My recommendation to SONY that they have to shut down mobiles division. They lost the map in phones world. They sell camera sensors to other brands and yet they coming with decent cameras on their own phones !! every time it took too long to start selling their phones after the announcement event while other brands start selling after 2 weeks maximum from the announcement !! Moreover, SONY has nothing special on software features to add to android versions unlike Samsung with new ONE UI and other beands.
I used to love SONY as I have many SONY devices phones, but after I bought the Galaxy S8 I think I will not go back to SONY.

a bit pricy but nothing different from other mainstream brands. Wouldnt surprise me that once other retailers start to advertise the phone it will go down (clove is just using a bragging right of being first to have it on preorder to inflate price) plus most probably gonna include some goodies. Just need to wait a month or so and see.

If you don't think this phone isn't worth its asking price, then no need to put an unnecessary opinion against it.
Buy whatever you want, but you can keep your sh*ts inside of yours, because there's no one asking for them.
This £849 Xperia phone already gives us the best-in-class display that anyone could ever find in a smartphone, while $1000 from those two popular brands can't even give their users a no-notch/screen cutout experience.
One couldn't even provide timely software updates and Android upgrades, the other can't even offer a charger that's as fast as many mid range smartphones today have.
