Jake, 14 Mar 2019 Is not about the tax itself. The problem is that Apple ban... moreyes, i thought of that. but the fact is google also has subscription service for google play music and youtube music albeit not that much of a threat to spotify, and through those aforementioned services you likewise can buy subscription direct from the app.

Spotify comes installed on Samsung phones. Spotify gives away Hulu-subscriptions. Spotify is whining. Apple does not need Spotify. Spotify needs Apple. Spotify should just stick to Android since they dominate in EU anyway. Take your tears home.

s-pen pusher, 14 Mar 2019i am not defending apple, i hate its greed as well and i ha... morei use spotify premium with android and i pay them not through google play system. The tax itself isn't the only problem but they created a home team advantage and not allowing features to be added.

I feel bad for spotify in the sense that they can't be profitable in their current state, since those music contract costs are not going down but up instead. It's the reason they have jumped so hard on podcasts, because every minute you spend not listening to music but podcasts is a win for them.

As far as the Apple app store is concern they are wrong. I do think the 30% at this point is greed on Apple's part, it should be about 15%. Most of the apps in the app store are free, but Apple is still expect to host them, maintain them, hire engineers to write tools and improve the platform. All those things are not free, it costs a lot. Spotify can't expect to get a free ride here. Besides, people do not have to use the app to sign up for spotify. When I sign up for spotify, I used the website, after I was done, I went to the store and download the app. As long as that option is available I don't see the problem here.

The main concern is that the only way of payment is through App store, in case of Android payment can be made without using google play store services

The problem is that Apple ban and not allow you to promote in your own app any other product or service to help customers to safe money outside the Apple store if the product compete with them. While they allow it in their own apps and chossed apps of third parties that they think promote indirectly the use of their phones, app Store, etc. I understand that they are not going to charge their own apps but not that they don't use the same rights for all the third party apps. That goes against free competition among third parties. At at the end, depending of the laws, if your shop is public, all the products should have the same rights including the Apple ones. Therefore, a large fine could fall against them.

Problem is that they are enforcing it and are actively making it impossible to circumvent it, and punish those who try. Apple isn't a government entitled to tax others.

i am not defending apple, i hate its greed as well and i have been loyal to spotify premium for 6 years now, but i have confirmed play store also has "google tax" and it is also 30%. i think it is unfair that spotify is singleing out apple.

Interesting that they've yet to sue Google for also imposing an equally draconian 30% cut on all subscription fees, especially since Google has enough resources to put Spotify out of business...

Woo! Sounds like that ancient MS Antitrust lawsuit.
And sounds like what led to Windows N versions.

Best of luck to Spotify. Apple burns its customers and then burns devs. And they handpick those that aren't burned. This is unfair and anticompetitive. I hope the EC burns Apple like they deserve, find them and then move on to apply a set of rules to ALL, including Google.

Europe: Spotify is correct, you can't stifle competition with your position.
Apple: But we don't have a monopoly, Android phones flood the market, so we don't need to change.

Also Apple: Hey stockholders, we have a monopoly on the luxury handset market and to consumers that actually spend money for our digital services. See our business is doing good, let's keep our shares high and stable.
