Weekly poll: are periscope cameras the future of smartphones?

17 March 2019
Traditional phone camera designs are optimized for size, which really limits focal length. First-gen periscope designs reach 5x zoom.

Sort by:

Periscope allows the smartphone's body to accommodate a longer or bigger lens setup.
Periscope setup is the future if it comes with a TRUE zoom lens like that of the Sony 1 IV and Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom.

Everyone needs ti focus on zoom and lowlight like Huawei

moon, 18 Mar 2019I suggest that you shall have to learn first the difference... moreI suggest that you read that too. Because optical zoom is not some magical tech without drawbacks to image quality, despite whatever b/s phone marketing departments try to push.

how small a sensor can be to be placed in a phone a few millimeters thick and still deliver a good photo?
It's a nice concept, but it might come with smudgy photos to suppress the noise, and would be priced a bit higher.
So maybe we'll see some decent ones in a year or two, until then, I expect to see hybrid zoom or potato zoom.

Problem with periscope cameras is that the aperture is limited still by the depth of the phone, which determines the maximum prism size and so the size of the front glass. If the focal length is around 6 times typical, the lens aperture will be at best around f/8 which means no low light pictures.

                  I really don't care..

Not really to be honest. While periscope cameras do help to increase the zoom distance, it is often done by hybrid, using other camera sensors that's available in the smartphone to achieve this zoom distance. Don't get me wrong, it's a good concept, it's just that I really do wish that we're getting the legit 10x zoom instead of a hybrid one. Of course, if it's an optical one chances are the smartphone's going to have a camera bump, because of the mechanism required to move the focal length back and forth, and that's one the advantages that periscope cameras have; it can help in reducing the camera bump. Good concept, but definitely not the one that can be kept for long

zoom lenses will only matter if we manage to have proper software for it. we basically need instant multiexposure and pixel-shift-style stacking while handheld. if/when that happens, yeah, call me. when that happens most point and shot cameras are fully dead.
