They would be ready for primetime IF:
1. They had a constant f-stop of f2
OR
2. Or a constant f-stop of f2 and an excellent low light sensor.
Plus sensor development needs to make even more capable sensors.

I'll take minor improvements over none at all. So yes, it is a commendable improvement IMO.
Once more manufacturers adopt the tech, we'll see rapid improvements to it.

Where did come the understanding that phone should be slim?
I personally like to have a much thicker phone with big sensor and optical zoom.
The rest of room would be useful for bigger battery.
Owning One+ 6 currently and 3x thicker phone would be better fit to my palm.

The future of front-facing camera is that they go under-screen. Samsung should come up with this sooner rather than later

No , the solution of that israeli company needs a smaller sensor to prevent more space being used.
Fake optical zoom aka +50mm/2x digital zoom usually has 1/3.4" or smaller. With even smaller, photos will be ever worse than already are.

Periscope cameras are not always zoom lenses. Oppo's periscope camera has a tele prime lens, probably Huawei will also have a tele prime lens. Huawei's tele camera is said to be equivalent to 125mm, not 160mm.
But by the way, a higher physical focal length only has a noise advantage in perfect light conditions. When the aperture diameter isn't larger, you would get bad sharpness (due to diffraction) and bad low-light performance. I don't know whether periscope cameras also allow for a larger aperture diameter, maybe not yet.
