Sony Xperia 4 might replace the Compact line, will have a 21:9 screen

20 March 2019
The idea is this: keep the width at 65mm, same as the Compact phones, but make the phone taller. This will be a mid-range model, though.

I have no problem in reaching the edges of my Z5Compact with one hand use, xz1compact is a tad taller which sony can fit a 4.9" or maybe 5" 18:9 ratio if they go for an extremely tiny bezel w/c other smartphone manufacturers are doing. Only sony have 21:9 aspect ratio which is not for everyone. 18:9 is mostly used in 2018. I also doubt other manufacturers will copy sony's 21:9 aspect ratio.

Personally, I think phone width and thickness are the most important factors when it comes to one-hand usability, in my opinion you don't need to reach all 4 corners, reaching the other side of the screen will determine whether a phone is too big. I add the width and the thickness of a phone (e.g. Lumia 820, 68.5mm + 9.9mm = 78.4mm total), for me 79 is the max I can go for comfortable use. Aspect ratio also is a problem for you as 18:9 to 21:9 is the norm these days so it will be difficult to reach the top 2 corners of a screen. Width and thickness is post-2016. Reaching all 4 corners is pre-2016 imo.

Now the problem is that mid range SOCs nowadays are efficient enough to handle our daily needs. So a midrange compact or shall we call it a "mini" would be appropriate.

Sony is now using OLED panels

Interesting... Still 4.7 or 5 inch phones should remain compact in a way or another.

I agree with Sony, the idea of maintaining width as before but adds to the length of a device to add a visual experience to CinemaWide. That is a good idea. The definition of compact is the size of the screen that is small but has a diagonal length as much as possible. In this case it is to create a screen with a unique CinemaWide ratio. If anyone compares with Samsung S10 or another cellphone then states that Sony phones are not compact, of course it's an idiot and irrelevant statement. The question is whether Samsung S10 and other cellphones use a 21: 9 ratio? No right? But it still uses the old and midget screen ratio.
By the way, hopefully Sony uses the amoled screen to create a lightweight cellphone.

The 21:9 5" screen fits in the XZ1C body but there are no bezels left for the cameras. I think most of us agrees that a compact smartphone should not exceed 127mm" in height.
