Weekly poll: Are tablets still relevant?

24 March 2019
We sort of have the feeling that Apple's new AirPods caused more excitement than the new iPads. Where did the "post PC" era go wrong?

gsmarena: Do you care about tablets?
Me: Of course I do, browsing/gaming/reading is very stupid with those small phone screens

If phones weren't 6"+ tablets were relevant - too bad manufacturers went the wrong way (imho). I personally can decide between 2-5 flagship-phones sub 6" and I mean flagship. If I want to spend 750€+ on a phone I want it to be near perfect for my needs - and that is 5,5" or less with highest specs and best cameras...

I have very small phone Sony XZ1 compact and hope that it would be even smaller, so that it would be easy to carry around everywhere. I have 9.7" iPad Air2 and I use it a lot when i need to read some articles, play games, whats movies and videos. Very good combination for me! So Tablets are definitely still relevants and small size phones are still relevant. I am not going to go jogging with 7" phablet phone... That would be really stupid! And I am not going to read a lot of emails and videos from 4" screen... That also would also be stupid...
There are different usage cases in devices!

Considering Apple just released two new Tablets, yes, I would say Tablets are still relevent. Just because other Android manufacturers are lagging behind with poor App Ecosystems and Benchmarks doesn't mean we should disregard them.

Apple is the only game in town. but some people don't want to accept it.

Anonymous, 25 Mar 2019are you really comparing 75$ tablet with 400$+$100 ipad and... moreYes I 'm comparing them and I have the right to do so, because there are no samsung alternatives. In a short, they are underpowered. I would pay a fortune to buy a pen enabled 7 inch tablet, the problem is there are no samsung s-pen 7 or 8 inch tablets (up to 300g).

Problem with tablets is... they're so underpowered. Best tablet I've used (and still do) in the sub-10 inch range is the nVidia Shield K1. Extremely fast, stupid long battery life, but also not a bank breaker. Only problem is the CPU is 32-bit only, so it's forever halted to Android 7.1.

Compare to most other Android tablets, that have very low speed CPU, hit and miss battery life, and are perpetually underpowered in the RAM department (2GB RAM in 2019, seriously?)

Otherwise, it's the DELL Inspiron 11, which is a Windows 10 Tablet that is also a laptop with a keyboard attached. Problem is, there's no CPU that has the combination of low TDP and power the Inspiron 11 has, so Skylake Intel is the "latest" thing there is in that regard.

Even the brand new Surface Go is a downgrade from the Inspiron 11 performance-wise.

Also, 4GB is not enough anymore. Minimum is 8GB for Windows to not drag when you ask it to do things.

Yes tablets are totally relevant but they last 3 to 5 years so don't need to opgrade as often as a phone.

Tablets are pretty much irrelevant by now to be honest, with smartphones doing exactly the same thing at a smaller package. And with that being said, the only reason tablets are still useful is because of their bigger screen size, which can be used for browsing the web and watching video content of course, regardless of whether it's using an IPS LCD or an AMOLED panel

I don't like big smartphones (likes compact ones) nor think tablets are useful. My phone & laptop are enough for me. Tablet doesn't seem useful, it's just nice to have in some situations.

Funny how polarizing tablets are. Many love them Many others don't care.
I love tablets, but for me a tablet to be really useful, needs to have:
                          1. pen support (for replacing pen and paper, no competitions from other devices on this)
                          2. have a (good) keyboard, as I hate writing on glass, even on my phone and since I often need to write (like now) when I browse or use social media, I never use my phone for browsing or messaging.
                          3. have LTE if it's a small (under 10in) tablet that I carry around (and I always carry around one, see point 2.
An ipad mini with a brydge keyboard and lte has no laptop competition today.
And it's the best on the go device for me (I can write as fast as on a full keyboard).
And at home I have larger tablets for videos and reading PDFs, newspaper etc.
The advantage is that I can have a compact phone (s7, to be upgraded to S10e) and never have battery life issues (i only use it for phone calls and notifications from whatsapp and other messages), which I then use a pc or tablet to reply to...

still very happy with my Lenovo Tab 3+ its my regular Netflix device. I love the battery life, great sound and that built in stand. Nothing touches it to this day for that sort of role. Works great for image processing too.

Just got a new Hauwei Mediapad 3 Lite for me to use and my daughter to play on.
It is actually pretty fast and does a good job where a phone is not needed.

Tablets are completely useless this time.
KLaptop or large screen phone does the job.

Jeremiah, 25 Mar 2019Phablets are a dead genre? People used to call a 5.1" phone... morePhablet is a new name introduced by Samsung. Other companies just used to call every 4 inch or above sized devices as tablets. Eg; Nokia N800 Internet tablet, Dell Streak 5 tablet etc were released before Phablet era and in those days 2-4 inch size devices were called phones; that category is completely dead now and tablets are called as phones nowadays
