I can’t remember the last time I needed to use zoom. Seems kind of pointless in the big picture.

However, when smartphone manufacturers exaggerate claims and mislead naive phone users they must upgrade their phones annually because of 'improved' camera features, when smartphone manufacturers claim 'DSLR's like' image quality and that the obscene $1,000++ for a smartphone is actually a 'savings' because you no longer need a dedicated camera, is just plain false advertising doing a disservice to hapless, naive smartphone buyers who are getting ripped off and would have been better served by holding on to their 1-3 year old smartphone and buying a dedicated camera instead. It's not criticizing for the sake of criticism. It's called educating smartphone buyers against the pitfalls of fraudulent advertising from smartphone manufacturers.

            Too bad it doesn't exist..
Also, what's wrong with people wanting better products? If we'd be all settling with just 16GB ROM and 2GB RAM, progress wouldn't be made..
We have to remind the brands that we want DSLR quality on our smartphones, or we won't buy their products. PERIOD.

Bob, 24 Mar 2019The Samsung Galaxy K Zoom offers a smooth 10x optical zoom! Yes that's the best camera phone in existence when it comes to real, usable 10x zoom because its 100% optical zoom with optical image stabilization and manual focus option. Not some fake hybrid, intelligent or whatever fancy name zoom technology manufacturers come up to disguise crappy digitally zoomed images obtained applying horrendous amounts of sharpening and postprocessing to heavily cropped images from tiny 40++ megapixel smartphone camera sensors that are resized back to higher megapixels to complete the high zoom fakery. But then again, the Samsung K zoom isn't a camera phone. It's a camera first with Xenon flash, a bulky body and 10x optical zoom that just happens to be running android software and has phone call functionality. So there. Real zoom will always be for real cameras. It's nice to be positive about smartphone camera zoom technologies but as it is, we're not yet there. If smartphone manufacturers try to convince you your phone needs replacement/upgrade because it doesn't have a long zoom and phone zoom technology has advanced so much that it can actually replace dedicated cameras with 10x optical zoom, then think again. It's as fake as the fake digital zooms they offer. Certainly not fit for posting a moon photo even on small mobile phone screens with full HD resolution.

People want longer zooms and high quality images, and yet, they are buying $1000 phones instead of $400 real cameras, because they are too lazy to carry a camera.

"People want longer zoom ratios that current tele cameras offer. But people also want high quality images"

People also want 5G and 7NM chipset, 10000mah battery but 5mm thick, Unbreakable glass for the screen, fast charge 0-100% in 10 minutes, Audio Jack, IR Blaster, NFC, wireless charging just as fast as wired, 800ppi screen but 50 days of battery, 1TB of storage WITH SD slot, 16GO of DDR5 memory and Android system installed straight onto that ram, RTX 2060 graphic performance, camera with DSLR quality even in complete darkness, and people want all of this for less than 400$

But even with such a phone they would still find matter to criticize

                  Phones aren't disappointing, people are

You know, if they continued to make small display phones, they could've made it thicker without any other problem than the missing style/ looks. An example is Nokia 808. 4 inch screen, small bezels and a huge camera.
But, for now, let's hope for a good implementation of this periscope zoom... Yes we would love smooth zooming, but of course, challenges are there.

                    BTW I created a periscope when I was in 4th grade. :D

I don't care about the camera quality. They struggle like crazy to fit 5 cameras or more, BUT they still can't achieve DSLR quality or even get close to that..
I'm interested in the SMART part of smartphones. The camera is for obsessed fb sheeps.

Now if it was only as sharp as mi9 tele.

Based on the footage I've seen on the secret phone video (which is probably P30 Pro), I can say that it's definitely a cool feature to have and that the quality is rather good.
