There are actually different A-GPS implementations (check wikipedia). Many chipsets actually are regular GPS chipsets which use the assistance to get a better time-to-fix by downloading almanac and ephemeris through other channels. In addition, indoors it will still give an approximate position based on cell towers itself, which is desired for emergency location services.
The N95 (and presumably this phone) use a "real" gps chipset that uses additional information to enhance performance.

I am truly a sony ericsson fan...and i must admit, this N82, is Nokia's upgrade for SE K850i, its very sad because the K850i is a much nicer phone but it lacks the bigger screen,16million colors,WI-FI, built-in GPS, and a bigger memory stick included....sadly but true i think i will buy the N82 instead of the SE K850i......

Thats wrong. Thats incorrect. These two types of phone gps, the one that runs off of service through a data package on your wireless service. or the kind thats built into the phone that runs only off of gps and would even still work if your phone did not have service. So lets do a little more research before we act smart. A little knowledge is dangerous. Its scarry when people think they know the truth when they know only half and try to run with half a logic.

A-GPS (aka phony GPS) is NOT, repeat NOT better than GPS (aka true GPS). I would say get a clue but won't and will be polite instead. A-GPS works off the cell phone network towers rather than an internal device. Without a data plan, A-GPS leaves you lost.

A-GPS is better than GPS and is not there for network charge reasons. The phone is able to obtain the hardest-to-read parts of the satellite signal from the network instead. This allows faster and more reliable satellite lock and tracking with reduced power consumption, especially in built-up areas.

i h0pe it is noT goin 2 be dissappointing this time.. but i doubt it will have wifi as it is only for 450euro. but it looks good, (more like Sony Ericsson phones) due to da keypad

It is quite powerful but i strongly dislike its keyboard which looks a bit look like those of the N91.
Now that those who like Nokia slider phones, have their top of the line phone:
                The N95G 8G
that those who like Nokia candybar phones, have their top of the line phone:
                The N82
Can those who like Nokia Clamshell Phones, have their top of the lone phone too ?
                And one with a 2.8" or even 3" VGA screen , a high capacity battery,the build quality of the N93(or even better >:) ),8 GB of built-in memory,etc... ?

                    Dissapointing design option by Nokia...

In regards to the A-GPS, you don't need to pay anything in terms of network charges if you pre-load the maps via nokia's website... and it's totally free

I would say this phone is better than the N95 because it is smaller than the N95. Like they say, "Good things come in small packages."

However, the consequence of making the phone smaller is that the screen size needs to be smaller. So, if you want an enjoyable experience of web browsing, you need to connect the phone to a television. You cannot find a television available for your use except in your home, which then you would be using your personal computer.

The screen resolution is also outdated. Come on, still QVGA screen resolution after a year or two?

There is also no Optical Zoom. I rather have a 2 megapixel camera with Optical Zoom rather than a 10 megapixel camera without. That is how important Optical Zoom is, to me.

To the person who asked why use A-GPS. Well, firstly, if Nokia integrates a GPS receiver into the phone, the phone needs to be bigger and will be heavier. Secondly, an Bluetooth A-GPS receiver has its own battery, so the GPS usage doesn't drain out the phone's battery alot.

whats the deal with A-GPS who really wants to pay ontop charges for using gps. not me thats for sure. why couldnt they have dedicated gps like in the navigator, then this fone will be next to perfect.

this is better than n92, the design is of sony ericsson ,the versatility is of nokia, the display size is same as that of n73, now that's more i like it , a fusion of nokia & SE against Moto, Samsung and LG hehe! THIS IS THE PERFECT PHONE!!!!
