Anonymous, 31 Mar 2019I'm a long time android phone user. What I do praise about... moreAhem, not exactly true that Apple is so swift with hardware updates. Current lineup has a basic iPad with A10 (SoC introduced 2016), mini and Air with A12 (2018), and two Pros with A12X (2018). It should also be noted that mini follows the mini 4 which had A8, and Air 2 which might be perceived as a predecessor to the current Air had A8X. Previous generation of Pro had A10X.
So there definitely have been gaps, longer or shorter. It doesn't necessarily mean that those previous devices didn't perform well but it would be an overstretch to reckon that Apple keeps its tablet lineup regularly updated hardware-wise. If you want anything bigger than smartphone with annual hardware updates, look at most Windows laptop manufacturers...

Anonymous, 31 Mar 2019I'm a long time android phone user. What I do praise about... moreWhat can you do on a standard ipad that you can't do one an android tablet? Its ok having a good cpu and gpu, but if the os is still fool proof for the masses, and most people watch movies, use Facebook and surf the web is there really a need? I get what your saying regarding most androids, they are aimed for budget users and only a few standout in the crowd, and the costs are often reflected, but its not like you can get much more done in an ipad given the standard apps on the store?

To those who complain of underwhelming performance on tablets:
Firmware files extracted from the Galaxy Fold shows the full Tab S5 (not e) will have a Snapdragon 855. Finally, they did it.

Laptop is on different story. There are two kinds of uses: Laptop used like tablet, or laptop used like desktop/workstation.

Concerning tablets, I have an Apple iPadPro. I use the camera a lot. I wish the iPad mini had a better camera. I’d buy it in a minute. Easier to carry around and use as a camera. Camera+2 app great editing app.

I'm a long time android phone user. What I do praise about Apple is they use decent cpu/gpu for the ipad. Every year, the new ipad are equip with last year's flagship cpu/gpu. So when you get an ipad, it felt like you're getting the latest tech. On the other hand, most android tablets use mid-range cpu/gpu with really bad camera. They always aim for the budget users. So when you go buy one, it felt like the tablet is already outdated. It's not adding anything to help your productivity level.

Windows tablets don't exist, do they?
(What's quite bad, though, is that what cost $89 in 2016 still costs the same, Atoms are discontinued - IIRC of course, Celerons are a bit more power hungry - again if I'm not mistaken)

Tablet is basically treated like laptop now. People buy them and use them for a decade if they can. Pointless to upgrade if the work you do on it is not even heavy. Reading and video watching on tablet in 2010 will still be the same even in 2020. Just like browsing internet and using Words or PowerPoints on laptop never changed either for many years. Heck, even some offices still use old PC. Smartphone are upgraded every year for the sake of camera obsession and mobile gaming obsession. Just saying. You are free to disagree.

The only real different model is the ipad pro, which is basically just a souped up phone as well with a few bells and whistles, equally as forgettable, until tablet makers start coming out with dedicated desktop apps for tablets the market is pointless, i can do 95% of anything on a phone as i can with a tablet

The state of tablets right now, to me, is very hard to pick one. Ipads have 4:3 ratio that doesn't really fit to watch most 16:9 content nowadays, and video players on iOS is inferior compare to Android. Android tablets are just big phones with shit specs and usually forgotten after release.

My four year old iPad Air 2 does everything I need and shows no sign of slowing down. What would be the point of upgrading?

Android tablets on the other hand are a big joke.

And the last decent tablet at a decent price was the Nexus lte, so unless your willing to buy something from Samsung, there is basicaly nothing decent to buy in 7 inch tablets, that's why I still use my very first tablet, Samsung gtp 1000 and my nexus lte.. The Samsung being much older but better because its just a giant phone, you can make calls etc with it, which Google being Google decided to totaly cripple in the hardware so that there was no chance of anyone coming up with a hack to turn it into a giant phone, I'd love to hear their reasons for doing so !!!

I use my tablet everyday. The reason I rarely upgrade is because new android tablets are not really that big of an upgrade. The Galaxy Tab is the exception, but too expensive. It's not like upgrading my phone where there are tons of choices with significantly faster CPU/GPU and better camera at a decent price. Go make a better tablet every year. Give me a reason to buy one.
