thecalmcritic, 12 Jan 2012Ultimately it will be either:-
1. Power/batt life efficien... moreyes, X86 architecture, will have a strong advantage, when we start seeing Desktop linux and Windows 8 on mobile devices.
Lets just hope we will start seeing that soon, cause i'd really like a mobile that runs desktop apps... especially if it comes equiped with HDMI out, support for bluetooth keyboards and mices.

... moreand wht would Atom outperform ARM on a mobile device, running an OS built with arm in mind, that intel themselves ported to X86?
Do you actually think Android and android apps are made for X86 architecture to begin with?
Please, then read up on the subject.

... moreiOS built on OS X, in what way?
It may share some core components... but I dont think even steve jobs ever mentioned OS X again after that key note in january of 2007.
Its not built on OS X, it might to some extent share the same core.
iOS cant run OS X applications natively, and OS X cant run iOS apps natively.
If they really shared the same core, we would have seen arm-architecture support in OS X apps, long ago, and iOS devices running desktop apps.
And dont get confused by the name of some apps, garageband for iPad is clearly not the same Garageband that OS X runs, and the same goes for every other app that shares the same name on both iOS and OS X.

I think that you are right about that this is just another well done prototype which will be very soon forgotten and left on the shelf to gather dust around it.

AnonD-8044, 11 Jan 2012Folk often get mixed up with smartfones/tablets and real co... moreWow. You are too right. People just don't understand. And then just to prove your point right you have people like SFRAN and two comments higher doing exactly what you described. And it's the same with people thinking Intel's $1000 higher price tag for the same product is actually working $1000 better. It's a ruff life when you understand and are surrounded by many who don't understand and think they do.

DDR3 uses a lot more voltage than DDR, also mobile devices uses a thing called "LPDDR2" which is low powered DDR2, not even the same interface as DDR1 or DDR2 for desktop, can't really compare them.
HD3000 chipsets has a heatsink and most likely active cooling, when was the last time you've seen a mobile phone with a side slot fan attached to it to cool it down? For any GPU to come as close to any desktop graphics solution, whether it be integrated or discrete is a big accomplishment. Don't get me wrong, graphics chips for phones are a long long way from taking on a GTX 560 Ti, but again oranges to apples comparison.
iOS was built on OSX, so yes, their comments are technically correct.
Of course any ATOM would out perform any mobile devices depending on certain functions, that's because 1. Any atom based devices previously had a much larger power source, meaning energy wasn't an issue. 2. Most software were built around the x86 architecture so the x86 performing them better isn't something astonishing, however for certain functions you can bet that a mobile phone is just as good as a laptop. Mobile pages render just as fast on a laptop as it does on a high end phone.
I won't comment on the camera part because that's always true, its a physical limitation.

I bet Spec-maniacs will say dual cores and quad cores are still better even if they got beaten by a single core.

Ultimately it will be either:-
1. Power/batt life efficiency.
2. SoC to OEM pricing. *because there's the real battle where all ARM based SoC rivals can easily leverage and a bit harder for Intel due to market entry's timing*
3. Future GPU solutions. Though at this point PowerVR aren't a bad lot or maybe Intel has secret own graphics design in place that remains to be seen.
4. OS and apps. Win 8 should prove to be crunch time along with if Ubuntu decides to shoehorn the full distro in their mobile plans. If Intel can prove that it can scale CPU performance close to full x86-64 netbook levels WITH the necessary must have smartphone's batt efficiencies heb they will own.
So until then let's see what Lenovo can gain from being the 1st.

Hence why he put quotes? Then again he was right when he said he doesn't bother debating it with them anyway cause they clearly wouldn't get it
Good post brynn. Well said. Especially the camera part where people seriously think that a 16 mp camera is always better. According to what I have read. You are better off generally buying a camera that has been created in the year 2000because the new ones are all just trying to push out a higher megapixel mark. Where as the older ones were Moe focused on the lens and other things that make a camera good. Whatever I'm out

Folk often get mixed up with smartfones/tablets and real computers/laptops...I try to in as basic as possible show where on a list this powerVR GPU is in comparison to Intels bottom of the range HD3000..Also laptops have DDr 3 RAM running at GB and that the GPU have L1,L2,L3 caches..Lastly laptops /computers are running a huge O/S ...
Then folk with iphones say its running Mac O/S 10 tho and then i try to explain and just give up...
I try to tell them that an Intel Atom proccessor would run rings round your SGS2 but oh no they say,
"My sgs2 has 2 x 1.2GHz proccessors which is 2.4GHZ and 50% faster than the Atom"..
So it hard to tell some one the truth BUT thats great for the manufacturers who blind them with high numbers year on year to impress them..Look at this 16MP camera thats announced,,it does not mean anything if the sensor is small and optics are poor quality..Oh well lets enjoy it all its something that keeps me excited each day.
