Anonymous, 17 Apr 2019then you stay in 3G :) and good luck with streaming 4KThank you - as a matter of fact, my main home connection is a 4G/3G mobile hotspot (remote area) with signal strength 1-3/4, speeds topping around 20 MBit/s and latency in the realm of 100-200 ms; and streaming in 1080p isn't an issue :P

Fearghast, 17 Apr 2019That is not how compression works + yes, you would be able ... moreexactly! and one more thing... soon you will have foldable phones... which means bigger screen... and difference will be huge. but this is only one of many improvements... i think that we are not aware how 5G will improve our experience in general.

Wekll even if so i dont believe qualcomm will sell modems to apple and if they so they will do the bigest mistake ever but i will not mind if they milk enough money from apple more than on the courts.

The development of 5G means 4G network users will be lessened, and so making this network speed much cheaper, which is a win in my situation IMO, because not only do I enjoy more 4G speeds at lower prices, I get to use it better since I'd be one of the few left to use this network while the majority are already making the switch to 5G.
That's to say, I'd certainly miss the goodies of 5G, such as lower bandwith and higher speeds, but I'm yet to do something in my life to need the benefits of the new technology.

540p and 720p videos are more than enough for mobile phones and tablets up to 8 inches, and you would not see any increase in sharpness if you go above that resolution.

Qualcomm cant fight with intel because apple problems, patent that apple using have both sides number of patents they using. This is kind soap opera we need to ignore like more drama than innovating

Still quite difficult to wrap one's mind around the benefits of the whole 5G hype for the common end customer. Any tech enthusiast willing to chip in please? 'Cause from my viewpoint 4G (and even 3G to some degree) are perfectly sufficient even for the foreseeable future, aren't they?
- streaming video (incl. video calls) is all right once you are in the 10-20 Mbit/s range.
- uploading mobile-generated content to the likes of Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp is not a problem to be solved either.
- audio streaming, e-mails, messaging are all things which use just a fraction of current technologies' potential.
- one of the very few potential issues I might see is the latency. But then, which real-world use scenario apart from online gaming is that much dependent on low latency that it can't settle for 4G?
- another possible motivation for 5G deployment might be the ability to deal with the ever-increasing traffic volume; but couldn't it be solved with scaling of existing infrastructure?
I wouldn't pretend I'm a specialist in comms tech so I'd be happy for any educated reasoning ;) Because right now, I've got the impression that 5G is another excuse for hardware companies and carriers to keep customers paying higher prices than necessary (if given a choice, I'd personally stay on 3G for a more reasonable price and more robust network - we're talking UK level of services).

For QC the victory is temporary. Apple clearly knew that Intel is behind many years away for a useful and competitive 5G modem and probably mitigated it in few ways

I wonder how much Apple paid Qualcomm for the settlement... probably a chunky amount.
Apple knows the current buzzword is 5G, and they want to jump on the hype train while it's in full motion.
