To be clear, the Oppo Reno 10x zoom doesn't have 10x optical zoom (or 6x for that matter)

Periscope cameras are an amazing feat of engineering. But while we initially thought the lens on the Oppo Reno 10x zoom would offer a 6x optical zoom factor (160mm lens), it turned out it doesn't.

Gsmarena will be comparing all cameras with P30 Pro...seems little biased comparing 500eur gadget with 1100 eur one. Despite the name.

Neither this Oppo, neither the P30 Pro, have neither zoom neither optical zoom. They just have 3 fixed focal length lenses. Try to zoom to, for example, 35 mm with any of them, and you will see.
Fake zoom, fake bokeh, fake AI ... Marketing sells anything.

"anything over 6" is a phablet and doesn't deserve to be called a phone." With the dumb 19:9 ratio we nearly have any "phones" back then... Goooodddd!

the zoom is 6x instead of 5x, due to the digital image stabilization. A 5x optical zoom will make the actual image in the viewfinder very shaky and out of focus. the digital image stabilizer will crop out corners and stabilize the live view in the viewfinder, hence 6x zoom.

Oppo neve claimed it is 10x optical zoom and the reply they got from Oppo is also badly paraphrased

"We turned to Oppo for explanation and the comment we got was that this 6x hybrid zoom delivers good quality."

When you get a question on a test which you have absolutely zero clue about, but you don't want to leave the space empty so you throw in some generic garbage answer in hopes the teacher won't read it. Anyway 10x zoom or not, anything over 6" is a phablet and doesn't deserve to be called a phone.

Oppo Pseudo 10x Zoom would be a more appropriate name for it.

Btw, June launch? I thought I had read it would be May...

                      Even their answer is stupid.
"We turned to Oppo for explanation and the comment we got was that this 6x hybrid zoom delivers good quality."

They didn't answer the question, but not at all. GSMA didn't enquire about the image quality of the hybrid zoom, which is just a fancy way to say real optical zoom which is then stretched more digitally, which causes direct quality loss.

It is cheaper and that's why they faked it. The actual hardware in P30 Pro aren't gonna be cheap

That is indeed really stupid. Essentially we're not allowed to have a crisp 5x optical... because marketing. Way to have contempt for your customers.
