Give people choices, like on my Note 9:
1. Face unlock
2. Rear fingerprint unlock
3. Front fingerprint unlock
4. Side fingerprint unlock, like the Sony Xperia - easily the nicest to use because it works when the phone is in a dock etc
5. PIN unlock
6. Trusted devices unlock (invented by Motorola I believe and totally awesome)

"dreaded notch" yeah apple has the obvious reason for theirs but please explain why everyone else had to copy it? Rather than blaming apple for the dreaded notch why not blame the companies that copied apple for no other reason than to look like apple.

            Go get milk

Now, to be fair, most people here are hating on Apple because they think it's just a regular in-display fingerprint sensor. However, if you read the article, it's completely different technology: "The patent explains that an acoustic transducer could convert electricial signals into mechanical energy or vice versa. (...) ...it would be able to authenticate the user as he or she answered a phone call. The patent explains the technology would even have the potential to read a personÂ’s vitals like heart and respiration rates." - this goes way, way beyond regular in-display fingerprint sensor.

Personally I consider regular in-display fingerprint sensor as something counteproductive, as it serves exactly the same purpose as regular FP reader (just will less accuracy and reliability), but what Apple patented there very well might be a step in the right direction... Though I'm 99% sure it will make using regular 5$ screen protector impossible.

DroidBoye, 02 May 2019Apple just couldn't implement the in-Display FP scanner bef... moreApple couldn't do it before because there were no phones with Qualcomm's tech to reverse engineered from. Apple reversed engineered Nokia, Sony & Samsung phones to build their first iPhone - This was revealed in the Apple vs Samung court case.

Now the Galaxy S10s are available for reverse engineering. Apple should be out with under display scanner soon.

DroidBoye, 02 May 2019Apple just couldn't implement the in-Display FP scanner bef... moreThat lawsuit has already been settled.

Apple just couldn't implement the in-Display FP scanner before due to their undergoing lawsuit against Qualcomm so it's understandable now that Apple were pushing the in-Display FP scanner because Apple and Qualcomm and Apple were in a truce, most probably, they're going to use Qualcomm's tech for their new Biometrics.

So you think of a crazy idea.. you still have to search if your crazy idea is implemented by some other company.. before you patent it.

But if you claim otherwise.. where is your source? I would have approach the original patent owners and work out some $$ instead of commenting here lol.

Most of the people commenting here couldn't even care to read the entire article.

See this "In any case, we don’t think that Apple will implement an in-display fingerprint scanner on a future iPhone since this patent was originally filed in Q3 of 2016 – around the time that the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus was announced."

Patent for a security method already in use or just for the name?
