OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro won't have an IP rating for water and dust resistance because it's expensive

03 May 2019
The company chose to buy a bucket instead, and dunk one of its new phones in it.

By the way in middle of ocean even with life jacket you wont live more than few hours depends on temperature of water, weather and many other conditions.
On flagship phones IP certification adds another 100 bucks to the phone costs.

It protects against and only plain water.
Toss your phone into cooking oil or toilet or glass of coke and your warranty or IP certification wont save your phone from permanent damage.
So again its costly and useless.
As long as your warranty doesnt cover water damage IP certification will always be nothing except an expensive gimmick.

Well IP rating was always useless and obsolette.
Maybe ts nice to have and good for clumsy úpeople with lazy hands but at cost of more money and NO IP PROTECTION will give you a water damage warranty regardless of phone brand.
So if even and IP68 certified phone gets water damaged you are done for good.

So again to me IP protection is useless and obsolette and for clumsy people.
Unless you live in rainforest or work as a firemen something like a water resistant phone is stupid thing which cost a lot more money.

Then maybe some Cat phones or phones rugger like that such as Doogee S55 lite which cost 150 bucks but is heavy as brick but offer good specs and protection for that price.
                  Or Myphone Hammer blade pro.

This is very bad marketing! U cannot justify not doing something coz it costs money. Even manufacturing a new phone costs money, so why make a new phone, OP?. I believe, OP lost all the credibility & direction after OP3. Its just mass hysteria driving their sales.

All I understand from this clip is the fact that the device will have some degree of water resistance, but will not aquire some level of certification. If this prooven true, then it will be a good new feature for the One+ lineup.

Anonymous, 04 May 2019The companies advertise that your phone can survive if : ... moreNope. IP68 isn't "rain" or "sink" or "faucet". IP68 is a very clear standard. If you are using the device within the limits of the IP68 certification context, they are legally bound to fix it.

If your OEM won't fix it, it's time to change OEM

OnePlus is not cheap anymore, but it's BBK so they require much higher profit margins than Xiaomi and Meizu, which is the real story here.

Samath N8 808 owner, 05 May 2019So, what do you suggest has actually happened? Did they ... moreAs someone pointed out before, the most expensive part of getting the IP rating isn't the certificate itself, but actually building the phone precisely enough to not let the water in.

So, it's definitely one of these two options:

                                  A) They did some internal testing, found out that the water is leaking in and didn't even bother to do the testing, or

                                  B) Tried to get the IP certificate, but failed to get a proper rating.

I don't know which one of those it is, but I'm sure that company with such high sales as OnePlus (mind you, the more phones you sell, the lower the "cost" of the IP rating is since it's a one-time fixed investment) would've never blinked an eye to get it done, should the OnePlus 7 be capable of it.

btw. the whole 'IP certification' testing will be more or less ~5 guys in lab coats dunking a small sample (20-50) of devices in water various ways and then checking if the phone still works/if the water got in. They're not going to take a million dollars for it, otherwise every other sub-100$ chinese phone wouldn't have it. "IP certification would've added 30$ cost to each handset" (said by OP co-founder) is straight forward lie.

CompactPhones5ever, 04 May 2019False. Doogee S40. Released in MARCH 2019. Costs ... moreSo, what do you suggest has actually happened?

Did they try for the certification but failed to get a good rating (IP68 of competitors)?
Or do you think they're saving time and hurrying up the launch itself?

Because if its cheap, what's the reason to not do it?

One thing they're doing right is to cut costs. You can't argue against that... except if....

Their own disclaimer in this video, is like a self-slap. So, you don't get that confidence to take it to water. specially if its sea water or so.

So, we'll obviously have to make rules for ourselves, which means different rules, someone will take it to pool, someone will not, someone will be assured only for a rainy day...

My suggestion to Oneplus is to do some tests and suggest internal standards of waterproofing....
Tell us, we can drown it for how many minutes and how deep, without damage? That's all you need to do.
