In my personal opinion, and from what I see in some of the users, friends and people with whom I work every day, almost perfect device for the middle market will be the XL version of the A series of Xiaomi, for example MI A3 PRO or MI A3 XL as google does on its devices.
There is no doubt that the MI A1 and A2 & A2 Lite are good and successful devices. But I believe there is a place and expectation in the market for a very large device for the A series made by Xiaomi. because when a customer is interested in an Android One device such as MI A2 for example because it runs a clean Android but also interested in MI MAX 3 because of the screen's size, the situation here is that there is a dilemma what buy between two quite different devices.
The best solution in my opinion is to produce a larger version (possibly even more premium) of the A3 as Huawei does with the P20 / P30, Samsung with the S10, Google with the Pixels, etc. - to this place the market is marching... or alternatively create an Android one version to the MI MAX 4 / MI MAX 4 PRO, which will be released very soon.
Such a device is currently lacking and I personally estimate that there will be demand if it is launched.
I hope that Xiaomi receives feedbacks from their customers, listening them (and maybe reading comments) while receiving their decisions before production.
I would like to hear from the users of this wonderful website what do you think?
Thanks (-:

No wonder they can put it in THEIR midrange devices...jokes aside, there's no way Samsung can supply the displays to Xiaomi (or pretty much everyone) at a cheap prices. So stop complaining, sure there's other phones with amoled display under 300 bucks but most of them can't match the internal beauty (specs) of Xiaomi devices. Plus IMO Xiaomi pretty much have the best camera among budget devices. Even their 450 dollar mi 9 camera is the best under 500-700 bucks category

Xiaomi should seriously consider a compact phone similiar to iphone 6/7/8 but modern with less bezel and android one, metal/premium plastic like iphone 5c. Plenty of xiaomi phones flooding the market but still they are yet to fill the gap of the niche market for compact lovers.

Snapdragon 730 - 6GB ram - 128GB storage - 4K video - 3.5 jack - SD card slot - 4000 MAH battery - aluminium body or aluminium frame with glass back - cool colors and no more than 400 USD. Do all of these and it will be my next phone. It will fly with android one.

Recently there are some reports Xiaomi Mi9 SE is selling very well and it is 350 USD. But I cannot consider this phone as compact.
Me personally have Meizu 15 and it is great device, but this is not a compact phone. Maybe for me a compact phone is iPhone 8 and it is selling very well even now.

You gave me example and here is my take: look at iphone x, xs, pixel 3, pixel 3a, essential phone, galaxy s10e, galaxy a40, Samsung one UI... do you want me to long the list any further? And, I'm sure, Xiaomi is not stupid enough to not jump into the bandwagon by offering only one device. To me, Smartphone is all about fashion device, camera device, communication device (occasional reading, social media checking, app based messaging and call)

If compact phones were selling well, every OEM would make them right now. Here is the clue, nobody makes them anymore.
With all due respect your opinion, obviously most of the consumers doesn't share them. They voted with their money.
Wake up, smartphones are not just mere phones despite the name suggest. It's a video player, it's a music player, it's a navigation device, it's an assistant, it's an ebook reader, it's a browser, it's a mobile gaming device and list goes on and on. All in all it's a computer with in-built cell phone function. It's evolved from cell phones and become whole another thing. "Phone" name is just stuck.
Most people have two hands and large enough pockets for today's mainstream "phone" sizes.
