What is the difference of breaking through a display window and this machine? It may even easier to break the glass of a store's windoes compared to this. I can only assume they make the glass quite thick and layered.
Alarms and cameras seems like obvious things to have in place.
Not to mention location. They probably won't be placed on remote locations where people don't go, but in populated/crowded places.

Not only the steal of the phones inside... the problem will be the steals and assaults of people after purchase to get a phone even if the IMEI of the phone you buy is registered in the operation. Or steal you when you are buying if they see that you are going to pay with bills and coins.
That only could work in places with additional cameras and private security that can act in seconds. And event in that situation i can't watch people taking that risk.

Can Xiaomi not do that in the US? Why no phones or tablets in America? This is just sad. I want a vending machine that sells phones. By God, Apple, Samsung, LG, or even Nokia, take a lesson from Xiaomi and make vending machines in America please.

the main issue I would have is someone simply smashing the machine open and taking everything.

Well come here to Slovakia with that and Gypsy people which counts here as a 5% of total slovak population will steal all phones inside even before you will install first vending machine :-)
