Technically, the OnePlus 7 Pro's telephoto cam doesn't have 3x optical zoom

And it's actually 13MP and not 8MP.

[deleted post]no wonder OnePlus dares to do that if Samsung did the same thing and didn't get any trouble for it. Thanks for the video, now I know that these multinationals are cheating us, since the optical zoom is digital in the end.

Sorry, but that's completely wrong. Optical zoom doesn't change the perspective. The distance changes the perspective. So in this regard there is no difference between digital zoom/cropping. Actually every smartphone 2x tele camera is not real 2x optical zoom. For example the main camera of the iPhone Xs has a (if I remember correctly) a 4.25mm focal length whereas the tele camera only has 6mm. That's why the sensor of the tele cameras is smaller, a smaller sensor is technically the same as cropping a larger sensor.

Anonymous, 24 May 2019Why cant phone companies do honest marketing? - one say... moreBecause they know that most people ... let's say, is not smart.
Anyone with a decent brain knows that the battery won't last for two days with heavy usage, and that you can't make a "professional" video or photo with a smartphone camera, and that a photo from a phone camera can't look like the one in the advertisement, and so on.
But most people doesn't have a decent brain, and they fall for all those things you've mentioned. That's why phone companies don't make honest marketing.

                                yeap, tested, it's true!
but that's a good thing since the quality on the portrait mode is much better than zoom photo so I will use that from now on! Also 3x is pretty spectacular but not that usefull in day to day photography, 2.2x will be more frequently used.

Why cant phone companies do honest marketing?

                                    - one says two days battery life , but does not say it is for very average use.
                                    - one says their device can capture professional videos , but videos are 8bit SDR
                                    - few use Full Frame to take photos and say they come from their phones
                                    - many boost CPU performance when benchmark is running, but works normal for any task
                                    - one says cam is reimagined when it is a copy of another brand
                                    - few say they have Nx optical zoom (that is not optical), but is shorter FL + digital zoom
                                    - many say phones are water resistant, but you better avoid water
                                    - one says " cinematography" screen but have a nail sized hole to eat part of it

They all cheating, why should OP be an exception.

"The telephoto camera is actually 13MP outputting an 8MP image by cropping 6MP to achieve that 3x lossless zoom."
                                        13 - 8 = 5, not 6. Yeah, I did the Math. LOL.

The GIF demonstration was the best.
It looks funny for some reason lol
