Walter C. Dornez, 08 Jun 2019Ah, so one is European. My bad. Still, considering that ARM... moreNo worries. As much as I know, Sailfish would run on almost any hardware and I am a bit sad that Jolla is so unknown. But IF ARK/Oak comes and most of major Chinese OEms adapt it, spygle will suffer for sure. Happy days. :) o

Ubuntu touch, while being open source, is owned by Canonical, a private company based in the United Kingdom. Precisely they are fleeing from Google for that reason, the problems that cause that a third company may decide to stop supporting you for political issues or others. And a company based in the UK does not think it's precisely what Huawei is looking for as a source to replace Android.

They could have used the AOSP as a point to start and continue its own developing way for it, even renaming the product. But clearly that is not the way they want ot follow. Be free and independent is a lot better, and offer your own open source code for use it great from a learn purpose plus use it if you want too in other products.

Why they didn't choose Ubuntu Touch, it had a greater impact, and has already an app store.

Hongmeng will likely find success in lower-end phones. There are still a lot of people who use their phones for just calling and sending text messages. Like those tiny retro looking Nokia phones.

‘possibility of security breaches given that Huawei devices won't be able to receive security updates directly from Google‘= this translates to ‘We will not be able to spy on Huawei phones any more’

Phone Reviewer, 08 Jun 2019Imma upgrade to this OS, android is getting boring for me. agreed.. #supporthuawei

Samath N8 808 owner, 08 Jun 2019My only problem with Google is that their entire data colle... moreThe Google main business is you and your private data, adds, exposure in their search engine, etc. The most they can control and track you the better for them. And yes all that extra processing consume battery, profit the use of extra ones, the more often change of phones and died batteries, etc.

Huawei on the other hand is a manufacturer than want to sell their phones around the world. They'll of course track people inside China by law. Although outside of China they OS will be absolutly clean and open source, precisely motivated by the competition. They want to sell their equipment and phones, you and your data is not their business.

The pre-installed apps is the only point they could profit as other companies pay them for add their apps preinstalled. Something that Samsung, etc, do. But even with that, about all after all this drama and problems they are confronting. I'm sure that they'll only pre-install few features allowing people choose from they want as sure, from now, they'll have to offer new online app shops. Which depending of how they do it, could become an extra business instead of use third party online shops. We will see.

Agreed//no argument there...but Google is right though...any new Operating Systems WILL have security problems at first..windows and android had it..but they fixed it...so Huawei can fix it too

My only problem with Google is that their entire data collection policy is against our health, environment, everything.
Even when we don't use the phone, its doing stuff in background and compromising privacy.

Remember how 1400 Mah battery of a Nokia Smartphone used to last 2 days or so?
1400 Mah people, not 4000!! I know bigger displays and all, but the difference can't be this stark!
This is the extent to which background data collection and activity is harming us. The same battery goes waste quicker because of limited recharge cycles...
All the time, radiation and data consumption and all. And we don't even get to control it,,,

Google may look like they help, but they're harming mankind like anything!! Maybe motivated by USA govt agencies...

I hope Huawei makes a better OS! (Although I do have a feeling they'll be no better in terms of data collection and privacy.)

I clearly like want more alternatives in OS always. That force them to compete, improve, evolve and the best, that will let you choose the lest intrusive one. The one you like more or have what you are looking for. The matter is have alternatives and the freedom to choose. Like in PC choose whatever you want. I have several OS installed and depending if i'm at home or at work i use this or that, etc.

The apps are not a problem because developers around the world want money and will port ASAP their apps. Those that don't do it because some "intelligent brain" ordered and banned it... lose money, that is, is their problem. Alternatives will always be out there with a lot of competition trying to earn those void places.

A good SDK and tools that make the port easy are welcome for developers. Sure in Huawei they are already working on it. And in services, store, etc. Interesting upcoming months in this area. And all thanks to the trade wars the orange man (Trump) wanted to fight. Well, he is on them now, at least on three. We will see how all evolve and who knows when end and how. But the damage done will not be forgotten by those affected... a big boomerang for the future... Mr Orange Man.

Security risks that Google are concerned about: they can no longer collect personal, private, network, and position information from the phone.

Anonymous, 08 Jun 2019I don't use social media and other nonsense apps, and I hav... moreWhen your backgroup app refresh is turned off in iOS for those apps, they put on the hold event and register your tracking so once they are on foreground (in use) they automatically send all.

The matter is that "in iOS the apps track you as they do in Android and perhaps in Oak OS in the future, etc". If you avoid use apps that track you then only the OS will track you. So Apple anyways will continue doing it and only shared with goverments. Even the browsers track you with cookies and then offer you in advance adds related to visited products. For that reason with the new law that protect you in Europe, every web page now ask you each first time you visit it in a session about if you want accept the cookies, etc, by default or regret/choose what you accept from them. Usually if you regret, the web pages continue working without save any information and without tracking you but... some simple refuse to show you the page and keep you outside without show you nothing....

Avoiding the backgroup app refresh and tracking, you save battery. And avoiding use of those apps and refuse (only in Europe) the cookies and data store while browsing, you minimize your private data on the net. The OS will still do whatever they want for itselt. And goverments be sure can access your data whenever they want and in some countries by default through filters in key nodes that analyze non encrypted data.

Huawei doing what Google did with Samsung a while back. It seems that Google took the bait. Google got scared. No. 2 smartphone seller comming with his own OS ... :))))
I think that this OS is mostly for home devices and not so much for smartphones, but Huawei is playing this card well.
                                Nice one Huawei! :))))

I wish them good luck so much for open license Google. I don't get it if Google gets paid then everything is good but some one else gets paid then it's " SECURITY RISK " wow WHAT A WONDERFUL MARKETING!
