The f/1.5 f/2.4 dual aperture is simply not good. At f/1.5 it's less sharp than previous Samsung phones at f/1.7 , so for better sharpness than f/1.5 one needs to use f/2.4, which is bad in average light conditions as it captures only 50% as much light as f/1.7. Therefore the main advantage of the dual aperture is likely reduced vignetting in perfect light conditions. This is important for a high dynamic range.

And is this then done by a real change of aperture, or a ND filter as some compact cameras do?
It makes quite a difference, as the ND just limits the amount of incoming light, but does not influence the DOF. (And a larger DOF has it's pros and cons depending on the motive)

i want a bigger sensor instead tbh, the processing algorithms are not bad but a better bigger sensor is the way forward, also the wide angle lens on the new Galaxies is terrible, I understand there is to be some distortion but it seems way more visible on my s10+ then it did with my Huawei mate 20 pro, it is the close ups which look horrid, far away they are fine, i took a photo of a building and a lake, the foreground and the building were distorted beyond use, i couldn't even crop any of it out as it took up the majority of the foreground of the shot I wanted

Great, now use a larger sensor like Huawei and Xiaomi are trying to do so that the variable aperture becomes an actual feature rather than a marketing gimmick.
