Is the Nokia N8's successor to be the last Symbian device ever?

04 February, 2012
Nokia say time could be running out for Symbian and the N8's successor could be the end of the line.

Symbian was the best OS if you're comparing the freedom it gave compared to a PC OS.
It was the safest too, after the 9.0 update.

Symbian shouldn't have changed its version so many times. That killed the developers. They were coding more than earning, due to backwards incompatibility.

Unfortunately, it was tough for Nokia too, to upgrade it significantly. Heck, even the screen resolution didn't get boosted from N8 to 808.

Overall, for the productive user, Symbian was on hell of a OS, not comparable to iOS, Android and the likes.

    Ccc..
    Stupid Nokia!
This phone finally SHUT DOWN Nokia and I hate him!
    Why?
Too much features, but slow hardware and crap OS, totally nonsense EVER!
N8 is finally reason why is Nokia DEAD!
Announced 2010, April, Released 2010, October???
6 months later??? One more reason! Competitions have much better devices than any Nokia...
This video proves why is BAD hardware and most people HATE nokia for identical bugs:

nokia is all time best in mobile phones. it symbian platform was the best comparing to all the os. nokia has lots of features that no mobile can compete with it so nokia pleaz dont stop the production of symbian and show android that you are best.

Anonymous, 06 Feb 2012I'm really tired of hearing people saying WP is not the rig... moreBRO, Agreed ! but how come samsung (2x Poorer than Nokia) is handling 3 OSes ? WP,ANDROID AND BADA !!
Nokia Should do like that too! They Sould keep WP as their Primary OS, and keep Symbian as Secondary. Just like samsung keeps their BADA os as a secondary OS, But Symbian has 3x more popularity than Bada ;)

symbian just needs to be refreshed. Its a great platform. I have used almost every mobile os which supports multitasking; and i really admire symbian. It has a bit boring ui, but the basic os functionality is awesome. Belle is having a quite beautiful ui. WP7.5 is useless.. Too simplistic, doesn't even cover the basics, No direct file sharing, no microSD card support, no mass storage mode. It doesn't even support true multitasking. and they call it smart.. Meego is far better than WP in every aspect. And Symbian is really great. Developers can write programs for symbian in c++, java, Qt, python etc. Dumbs find it complex, but smartphones r not for them. Symbian is the man among other girlish operating systems. The beauty is in it strength. Nokia can easily do anything they want as they have such a huge user base, provided they don't drop symbian. If its not symbian, its not nokia.. Simple..

Don, 13 Feb 2012Dropping Symbian at this point seems rather stupid in light... moreI love Nokia.

              1) First class hardware
              2) First Class Camera Quality.
              3) Second Class Marketing.
              4) Second Class Firmware Update rate.
I think nokia Would not loose the market if it had not wasted time on making out S60 V5 V3. If I directly launched BELLE as First update to Nokia 5800 (also), N8 etc, then Android will be out of the market now.

These Slow Sluggish Firmwares before Belle gave an enough time to android to built strong basement. that is the fatal for nokia..... Nokia is not doing the things right in time. they are laggy....

Dropping Symbian at this point seems rather stupid in light of the recent and wonderfull Belle version.

It would seem that Elop is indeed a MS-troll (IF this RUMOR is true). For many smartphone entusiasts WP simply blows. I would rather have an iOS device than a WP device - same limitations, but iOS has more apps.

Android is a mess, but if Symbian smartphones (or some other Maemo-type OS smartphones) aren't available anymore, Android is the only option.

Congratulations to Elop then - he just handed over a big portion of Nokia's loyal customers to Android.

Nokia should make Symbian Open Source and give the licenses to Chinese mahufacturer for free and let them do the rest..

Elop is a troll and everybody knows that but I dont know why the Nokia board members don't throw him out. He wrecked Nokia and I anticipate that by 2015 if things will go exactly as they do now, without no change, Nokia will be bankrupted, with Samsung taking the crown and probably Apple as second.

Nokia should have continued with Symbian which was almost a perfect OS. Yes, it was criticized by Americans, they thought Symbian was too complex for their simple minds, where they need only 2-3 buttons, call-end call and on-off, but who gives a rat's a** what Americans are saying about Symbian? The fact that Americans didn't liked it, it should have been 100% irrelevant for Nokia. Symbian was an European OS, and it should have continued to live forever and make us Europeans proud for having our own phone OS.

Unfortunately now we're left only with American phone OSes. iOS, Windows Phone and Android are all American.
Anyway... at least if they absolutely needed to ditch Symbian, they should have replaced it with Android which is far better than Windows Phone and even iOS.

I hope the Nokia board of share holders will come to an agreement to fire Stephen Elop and furthermore maybe even sue him for conspiring against the company which he ruled. I also hope that Nokia will continue to support Symbian forever and also move some of their phones on Android.

PS Get rid of Windows Phone now, it's ugly, tooo simplified and very limited.

I bought two Symbian phones that worked great for the first couple of months before going bonkers. I first purchased the C-700 thinking that the sexy look would also mean it would perform as such. Mad disappointment. I got the X-700 and the behaviour was the same; it would hang for like 30 minutes and then just switch off. The C-700 is better because you can remove the battery and re-boot. The X-700 however is crap. Just now I have been waiting for it to stop ringing because I cannot use the touch screen to switch it off!!!

My advice is, if you can avoid a Symbian phone...please do. I'm hoping my dealer will refund me for the trouble I have gone through!!

i experienced symbian before and now i am using android. though android is open source and has cool apps, it lacks basic functions i am used to in symbian like grouping contacts without getting online on your google account, preinstalled Notes that in android you still have to download the app, stock file manager(should you download on android), app task manager that in android you get a list of processes, services bla bla which you don't know which app to properly kill and symbian's chrono list of actual running apps and not android's recent apps list which you don't know if thoses apps actually run or suspended or just a recent app that has been closed. 3 weeks on android and i miss symbians friendlyness. and also that folder by folder thing where you can manage your apps and files like a PC why would you hate it? i like grouping my apps and tapping two to three times to open folder than swiping through the sea of icons.

android is cool you know but at least they should have covered some basic functions.

Elop lost the long term vision and point to convert Nokia in a second level player with windows OS when the right strategy is emulate Apple and take control of a Niche with customers that are symbian centrics and love the Nokia stylish.
The fact sucessor of Symbian is not W7, is ANDROID....understand it
