26 June 2019

Use a real phone (Galaxy) and a goTenna radio, or "Hipster Mesh". No voice yet but they are leveraging Bitcoin lightning channel for micro payments to participating nodes. They will crack the code on out of band voice to keep the channel size down. Check out the "Ambassador" program to bring off grid communications to your town.

alcalde, 27 Jun 2019What's bad about this is that Oppo has seen fit to use thei... moreFirstly, we don't actually know it's Oppo's proprietary chip, likely they bought it from a semiconductor firm, so then other phone makers could adopt it maybe. Anyway, it might be unlikely that there are other Oppos in range to make the mesh in the US, but Oppo sells a lot of phones in China so it would work there.

I seem to remember that P2P connections are an optional part of the 3G or 4G spec; the phones use their radio to connect to another phone rather than to a mast. Dual radios would seem to be required for a real time mesh, so maybe that's the functionality of the special chip.

Actually this is much more than a radio or walkie-talkie because of the relaying feature. The 3km maximum range can be exceeded when there are other Mesh network participants in-between. I wish they'd released more information about it, such as whether it supports scatter-gather propagation in that mesh network and how how searching is done...probably an incremental binary search "have you seen this number 3 hops away?" no? "How about 4 hops away", no? "how about 5 hops away", etc... If the protocol is smart enough to allow payment for relaying other user's data...with their own cryptocurrency - it would be a market hit! I wish I could work for them - I have the skills...

Would be great for communication within an office, a factory (or even home) without having to carry multiple devices. And it is free.
