Oppo MeshTalk can make calls and send texts with no carrier or Internet connection

26 June 2019
It's a mesh network system that sends data between devices - no cell towers, Wi-Fi hotspots or Bluetooth needed.

Apple thinks their iPhones are so special. They still produce 5-6 year old phone seriously who buys them.

What's bad about this is that Oppo has seen fit to use their own proprietary chip. Obviously, the more users able to connect to a mesh network, the more useful it can be (at least if the users are spread out). Limiting this network to Oppo users makes it much less useful or practical.

They should have used existing radios (e.g. WiFi) and a protocol like Serval or B.A.T.M.A.N. I'd rather have a shorter line-of-sight range and much greater mesh performance than a 3km line of sight range and no one else with a phone capable of receiving my message. Serval and B.A.T.M.A.N. can use existing WiFi frequencies to transmit. I believe there are apps available for them already.

Shellyman Infinity, 26 Jun 2019Watch, Google steal this book sheet of paper.Oppo didn't invent the mesh network; the concept has been implemented since the 1970s.

It's because it's in bed with the Chinese military, has been caught putting back doors in products, and lied to purchase sensitive electronics for Iran, skirting U.S. sanctions.

The U.S. is capable of competing fairly with Chinese products - all without using prison labor, stealing foreign trade secrets or intentionally devaluing their currency.

there is just no other explanation for this to work other than that it would be using similar technology to walkie talkie- half-duplex channel that allows for unsecure connections. there is no low-power but long-distance radio tech available except for this. no, not ptt, because ptt requires cellular connection still.

L4nc3, 26 Jun 2019That would be nice!! Great innovation.yes, great new approach to walkie-talkie PTT feature we have since mid 40's....

not really, and if 3km is the best they can, so many walkie talkies offer more than 5km so...unfortunnaly people still prefer use a phone instead of a walkie talkie as that kind of "technology" is gettin less and less used.

but for who use it, is a great thing to have with u...emergency services like fire dep., police and so on keep using this kind of walkie talkies so, is easy to just press a button to find one or more frequency's of that kind of services.

so, OPPO isnt doing something new, is just improving one thing that already exist, is in baby stage i belive but in 2, 3 years if this can come close to 10km or more then we have a winner.

But US companies' lost money is temporary (outside China operations). Without those parts, Huawei will sell much less (if at all) devices. Consumers won't stop consuming. They will buy from other brands. Other brands will sell more. Other brands will buy more parts. Other brands will buy the parts that Huawei was supposed to buy. Demand and supply remains constant. Everything goes back to normal. Nothing dumb here.

Huawei is banned and quite innovative when it comes to camera technology lately. So his comment is not that dumb, it's quite true actually. US not only banned an innovative company, but also destroyed American companies profits. Micron for example lost 200$ millions because of this ban. It IS quite dumb.
