These were all broken under normal bumps ad bashes to jackets and jeans pockets areas, not actually by dropping!

Plastics are not all the same; they are a science in their own right.....

....like the difference between iPhone glass panels and Gorilla Glass HA! HA!

To sum it up; it's not just about the material, it's where and how you apply it!This is what good engineering is about.

The low cost but reliable construction used by Sammy allows them to spend money where it really counts, that is a punchy cpu/gpu combo that belittles everything else on the market at that point of time.

And they aren't stupid to go for a real thin design if they had to make significant compromises on performance. While I doubt that the phone will be 7mm thick, I don't think samsung will release an unusable device as its flagship.

GSIII should have a descent battery life, good glass and a FAR better body, Samsung really uses a cheap plastic body... We need smart phone who looks smart too.. Should be more than 10MP, and should have in-build games, camera apps, editing software and latest Android versions. GSIII as read in the rumors, should have an option for 3D photo/video shoots. And finally the PRICE factor... should be affordable. :) LIKE my comment if you agree....

Anonymous, 07 Feb 2012A 7mm thick device will be too thin to hold comfortably in ... moreExactly. The SGS2 is too thin to hold comfortably imo. I have a silicone case to make it thicker and to get a better grip.
This race to have the thinnest phone is pointless now that we are below 1cm imo. Work on the battery more thx.

Wilson, 07 Feb 2012Huawei Ascend will still take the cake. Don't really see an... moreThat Huawei P1S is just a PR stunt, not a very useable phone. Dual-core 1.5 GHz Cortext-A9 takes it's part from the battery, in addition to the large screen with high resolution. And when it's only about 1670 mAh, it wont last for long. The Ascend P1 however has a 1800mAh battery, and even though that too is a quite low for 2x1.5GHz and with that sreen size and resolution, it's still a bit more likely that it will last through the day and not desperately need a charge at dinner time.

Oh, and those extra 130mAh built it out by 1mm to a total of 7.7mm thickness. With that being the only difference between the P1 and P1s, they've made it very obvious that the S-model is just for PR's sake.
A total difference of 7.7 % in battery capacity and 15 % in thickness.

The Motorola RAZR and RAZR MAXX however, 85 % higher battery capacity in difference (1780mAh vs. 3300mAh). RAZR MAXX with the highest battery capacity on a phone you can buy today, and also including Motorola's Smart Action in both models, which Samsung will try and implement something similar of in their new SIII.

The RAZR, which is Motorola's slimmest and 0.6mm thinner the the Ascend P1, still have a decent battery capacity in line with it's hardware and will last through the day with no problems at all.

As I've mentioned before, Huawei has not been careful when designing the P1/P1s. It has same shape as the SII on it's rear-side and they have promoted it in several colors, including a black carbon/kevlar looking design which looks much like the Motorola Atrix/RAZR backplate. More like the Atrix than RAZR as it's made of plastic and the design stretches from edge to edge.

Huawei shouldn't take such risks in looking like just another Chinese copy maker. They've done a good job staying out of such things, until now.

Anonymous, 07 Feb 2012samsung should get phones like the s2 updated to ics before... moreI know, I am in the same situation. However, I updated mine to 2.3.6 manually, via Odin, and it's just as good. Kies won't recognise it for software updates anymore though, which isn't a problem, considering the fact I'll only be updating through Odin from now on...

Anonymous, 07 Feb 2012A 7mm thick device will be too thin to hold comfortably in ... moreThe SII with it's 8.5mm is less comfortable to hold compared a another slim phone like the the Motorola RAZR, even though it's 7.1mm. Reason is the SII is too slippery on the back, while the RAZR have something like a rubber-like texture covering the kevlar backplate.

It's not the thickness that makes a phone comfortable to hold or not, but it's backplate. And also the edges a little too. Some rumors claim the SII will have a 4.5" display, and all ready that means big size and big to hold. Hopefully they will keep it at 4.3" and with smaller edges 'round the screen for better grip in most peoples hands.

If the SIII gets a rubber-like back cover, like they have used on their Armani phones, then it can easy be 7mm and still comfortable to hold. If it keeps the annoying back cover of the SII, then you have to get your own backplate.

But by all means, rather 8.5 - 10mm device with a much bigger battery then the SII have. We need more phones like the Motorola RAZR MAXX, especially in Europe!

Like many others, I don't care about it's thickness.
12 mm thick would be perfectly acceptable.
But it needs AT LEAST a 2.000 mAh battery for me to even consider it. 2.500+ mAh would be highly preferable.

Samsung really has it all wrong, I have the galaxy s2 4.5 inch screen and it don't even last half a day. It's pathetic, Samsung sees the issue and is just ignoring it.
