As someone who is American, most people don't know their phone model because they just want a good smartphone that just works, that's it.
The majority of Americans that own iPhones like them because they simply... work. They're not tech nerds that care about the fancy new A12 Bionic processor, they're ordinary people! It's not because they're dumb, they just don't know/care. Besides, they have other things to do in life than care about their phone name. You don't remember what company installed the tile in your bathroom, do you? So why would they need to care about their smartphone name???
