Sensor photosites alone (black & white) were 64MP.
Bayer filter (for color) is 4:1 laid-out on top of the sensor.
The two characteristics above were physical and results to 16MP colored pictures as default/native (based on Default Bayer Filter arrangement).
The 64MP mode can be done after pixel-translation from 4:1 thus a camera with this type of Bayer filter arrangement is NOT a TRUE 64MP in color, they never does (including IMX586 and GM1), the 64MP were only an approximation of 4:1 to 1:1. Same as with IMX586 and GM1, their only difference is that Sony has much better pixel-translation compared to Samsung when photos at 48MP output were compared.
64MP in paper. Only 16MP colored. Additional processing is needed for and approximate 64MP colored-images.

Its likely a 12megapixel part but after it goes through their DSP, the resultant output is 64megapixel. Please don't fall for this crap. In fact it's likely XIAOMI is just copying the specsheet and that its the nanufacturer of the chipset that is complicit in deceiving XIAOMI.
Think about it, why would DSLR cameras have less power than something that is only a few mm thick? It's not realistic. Please tell your friends bigger number staregy is profit driven and oftentimes baseless and claims unsubstantiated.
