everyone, how do you think about (or if you actually working on the industry ("my friend say this and that" doesn't included ofc) then-how are) the working environment on big company like samsung, apple, xiaomi, etc. and what does "fair condition" means?
might be insensitive to say this but marketing gimmick has led me to think they could just give their employee a week day off each year or give $10 more than minimum wage/month to justify extra $250 for each smartphone.

No offence taken and whatever views and opinions you have are just as valid as my own so please continue to share them as I am very interested to learn about things from another persons perspective.
The fact that people have such opposing viewpoints even about something as simple as an smartphone, shows me that our global problems and responsibilities are going to take some very brave and open minded individuals to get together and meet in the middle to get to the most beneficial solution for all.

Anders, 28 Aug 2019And what are you doing other than virtue signaling? Saying ... moreDon't make me pass for an hypocritical person. I'm not OnePlus.
Give me sustainable electronics and I'll gladly take part of my current tech. Fact is, too many selfish beings don't care about fellow humans suffering so they can save an amount of money that pales in comparison to their exploitation. Not my fault. If people cared a minimum, every product on the shelves would be sustainable and poverty would be greatly reduced (guess what? People who work in those conditions are mega poor. Giving them decency and a salary will only help them, and a lot).
Humans may not be entitled to live, but you're certainly not entitled to ruin future generations' life. Just make an effort. Don't buy more than you truly need (not want). Use public transportation as much as you can. Recycle. Compost. Insulate your house. Travel locally rather than internationally. Avoid disposable items such as plastic plates and utensils. Use a refillable water bottle rather than buying a bottle each time. Is that really too much to ask? Some of those actions are even going to literally improve your life.
Also no I don't buy horror clothes. And yes I do recycle thank you. Takes a few minutes and I'm not dead due to this. Need a laptop for school but not made in India or China. I understand you just listed those things and already thought I was an hypocrit without even allowing me to answer. That's a poor way to discuss and debate.

harcha, 28 Aug 2019And how are such people going to afford a 450 dollar phone?... moreThe other choice is seeing their own friends and family supporting their inhumane working conditions. Mich better than saving up, isn't it?

BROKEASS TECH, 28 Aug 2019Well, the good thing is that my son has not been brought up... moreI was just batting for your son. Kids want the latest and greatest and don't care about issues, especially the ones that they are too young to understand or do something about. Of course I am generalizing here.
I hate it when people impose their thoughts, their beliefs, their ideas on their kids. By your original post it felt a lot like you'll hand a phone to your son and he'd probably be stuck with it, maybe for years.
Education is fine and all but a smartphone is a lifestyle choice and has a great impact on the life on an individual to make him stay connected and updated to the latest happenings of the world. This is especially true for young ones.
I'm pretty sure your son would love to have an iPhone instead.
You should ask him before you start making decisions for him. Just my 2 cents, no offense intended.

Had they released a real flagship phone with hardware which would be use able for a long time, such as sd712 or sd 675, and charged 550 euros, then it would have been a competitive product. With the present specs, the phone will be obsolete in 2 years, nullifying the positive effects it trying to provide.

Farhan aka Wolverine, 28 Aug 2019What if our son doesn't want it? He'll resent it and probab... moreWell, the good thing is that my son has not been brought up to favour one brand or follow trends. To answer your question though, if he did not want it then that is absolutely fine with me. I would hope that just by bringing these ethical issues to his attention would be a great education in and of itself and help him to be more aware that his choices in life do have consequences and do make an impact on the planet.
As he is still fairly young, he is not in a position to fund his own smartphone yet so I think this subject is actually better focused on the adults who can make purchasing decisions regarding these products and are in a position to make a well informeded and personal choice to buy into these types of products.
So I would ask you, what are your priorities when buying a smartphone?

Anders, 28 Aug 2019Your well reasoned and logical argument that phones being f... moreSad, but true. Principles behind this phone are good, but in reality it just won't work like that.
For 50 Euro less you can buy Xiaomi Mi9T Pro which will work fine after 4 years. And that 50€ you saved - you can spend on battery replacement.
S10e costs just bit more than Fairphone 3 and will still be usable after several years, and offers much better user experience.
What is the point of phone being repairable and removable battery if the device itself will be unusable after 2 years?

dev, 28 Aug 2019You've completely missed the point.
But I'm pretty sure... moreI was also happy to give this money to Samsung for the S10e.
Compact flagship device isn't easy to find these days.
My point is, they went a bit too far with the price of this thing. Because that is a hardware that you can get for around 250 Euros. 300 tops.
So, another 100 Euros for removable battery would usually be fair, and also to know people got good wages... but this phone pretty much charges at least three times the value of it's hardware.

Mr. Anonymous, 28 Aug 2019"built to last"
For this it needs to have at least a bet... moreYour well reasoned and logical argument that phones being future proof spec wise is actually more important than just construction wise isn't welcome here :-) ;-)
Buy a Note10+ with 12GB RAM and 512GB ROM and it will still be working fine in 4 years.
This Fairphone won't. So not all that sustainable really

Did you write your response to me on a 100% recycled and recyclable phone or computer?
How many iot devices do you have?
Smartphone(s) produced in China or India? Laptop? Tablet?
Do you own any Nike, Adidas or any other billion dollar company produced clothing?
Do you only eat organic food?
Do you recycle all your old things?
I'm not denying climate change, I just don't care.
Humans have no intrinsic right to exist or to continue to do so.
I'm not going to live my life in a more inconvenient, detrimental way so that perhaps in 200 million years humans that may or may not still exist can breathe slightly cleaner air.

This company supposedly influenced Samsung, Apple etc in obtaining conflict-free materials.
But let's just bash them for supposedly overcharging a niche crowd that is locked out in the current market.
Guess it feels good using your Chinese slave made shiny stuff to keyboard warrior your online activism re: Amazon forest burning, global warming while sipping latte on Starbucks.
