Huawei explains how the palm rejection on the Mate 30 Pro works

20 September 2019
The sides of the screen curve 88° and are used for some virtual controls. However, they also present a challenge for case designers.

I don't understand why Vivo and Huawei are making phones with such extremely curved displays, it's too unpractical.
See how Samsung has been reducing the curve each year, the S6 Edge was a mess.

Ripcord, 20 Sep 2019So, basically if you drop your phone and falls on its side,... moreYeah, happened on my S7 Edge, and this Mate 30 display goes even farer.
Looking at the cases in the article, it doesn't protect the sides of the display because of the volume slider.

Is this another reason to reject the Huawei Mate 30 Pro?

Meanwhile at Apple. "We talk only about Innovation here."

Adding shoulder or trigger buttons is a bonus in games but for volume I would suggest simply sliding finger up and down to lower/raise volume and is there a specific area where volume slider will work or will it work on entire edge

                    Awesome

Anonymous, 20 Sep 2019Exactly When Samsung done it then it was a gimmick only ... moreOn the Samsung edge displays, the curved area had touch input active, so you ended up with unwanted palm touches and it was a pain to hold it without fidgeting around the UI.

Huawei (and Vivo) have found a very clever solution to that problem by disabling touch input in the curved area (except the virtual buttons), and this makes the whole thing much better.

Samsung's concept was cool, but execution was poor. Here the execution is admirable as well. That's the difference.

So, basically if you drop your phone and falls on its side, then RIP??? Also, not convinced about double tapping anything to get to volume...

still, I dont like curved screen because they make your phone slippery to hold and when dropped it's likely to break as most case when ur phones dropped it'll most likely side of your phones or corner hit the ground first

so when a UI element is outside the flat screen area you cant touch/use it?
on the galaxies theres often a button/scrollbar on the edge where you've to touch the edge to use it

Anonymous, 20 Sep 2019Exactly When Samsung done it then it was a gimmick only ... morethe power button is still there, it's just moved down due to the screen design.

what they've done is actually pretty smart, the volume slider is genius and the fact you can use the sides as a shutter key and as virtual buttons is extremely welcome.

this phone is the perfect cameraphone, it's essentially like what Sony Ericsson and even Samsung used to release way back. not everyone will buy these phones but the people that will buy it can get great value.

When Samsung done it then it was a gimmick only andsince then Samsung been trying to make them less steep whereas Huawei is making them even steeper and now they removed the power buttons and all these fanboys are loving it.

The hypocrisy is very strong in these fanboys

I don't like the curved display, you need a full cover case to protect it. I like simple case... And why you need this display is you can't connect 2x with a case and use Bluetooth connection to make a fold out of it ????

But yeah, i still prefer flat screen & physical air trigger like ROG 2. Huawei create the waterfall screen mostly just for design aesthetic value.
