AnonD-731363, 01 Oct 2019No surprise Mate 30 is the winner like every year they are ... moreSpecs wise, they are far and beyond, with the exception for their phone audio.
Cost wise, they are also quite reasonably priced, not to mention they even comes with freebies in comparison to others (Samsung) and the exception of one stingy company (Apple).

They should be leaders if not for some cheap world trade tactics by someone who is now trying the same tactics to keep his helm. LOL!

Even a child knows that large camera sensor will win. So no need to camera test.

I think reference photos from a professional DSLR would good for comparison.

Walter C. Dornez, 30 Sep 2019Interesting. So the phones are made for different types of ... moreNo surprise Mate 30 is the winner like every year they are far better than even the second in line.
When comes to photography Huawei outruns every competition when comes to anything else they usualy outruns other competition.
And in next year when it will comes to OS i believe that harmony in phones will outbeat IOS and Android.

                    Daylight main:
Apple's new contender is generally the most balanced, with stable performance in the widest range of conditions, small quirk regarding the HDR that may eat a little shadow detail.
Despite what DxO says, Samsung's Note10 is a fail regarding imaging as I noted soon after initial samples. Hope the 108MP S11 saves them a little face.
Huawei's main has much improved detail at the expense of some strange haziness(that doesn't seem to be DoF related) and overall perhaps too *little* default sharpening, I can't believe I'm saying this. Though they rid the yellow cast of RYYB from P30P, the downside is that blue and yellow are both very muted, and yield less detail than other colors (chiefly red and green of course). Overall it could finally compete with the Apple offering in terms of detail retention, but unless Google screws up, Pixel 4 will again come up on top.

                    Daylight UWA, 2x,3x:
The left and right edges of the Apple UWA samples seem notably worse than other areas, it may be a defective sample or otherwise I don't know how Apple could justify the hump-on-hump with such poor lens performance and mediocre aperture.
Samsung's UWA is overall very close to Apple's, better edges but worse processing overall(this could be the Exynos version whereas the SD version would no doubt be better), its 2x is very close but not quite up there with Apple's. Obviously the 2x isn't going to catch up to the 3x in terms of detail retention but it would be useful to see a comparison with Mate30P's "hybrid" 2x.
Mate30P's UWA seems...although a little perplexing, worse than the main, which is both smaller and uses RYYB. But of course it's decent on its own, limited FoV aside.

                    Low light:
Apple delivers very respectable performance on its first try. Obviously its handling of the floodlights in the second set of samples is more natural than Huawei's "juice stain", however I don't recall Huawei's night mode handling highlights this poorly since P20P. Huawei's night mode this generation suppresses highlights so much they're no longer highlights, like how the light from the street lamps in the third set fade into a sort of background illumination. The images are far too flat, and despite how daylight sharpening has been dialed down very far, they still don't go easy on NR at night. I have to say I'm surprised how the much larger sensor fails to completely clear them from the competition in low light, in fact the auto performance is arguably worse than Apple's when they have about a stop more light to work with. Samsung's coma is through the roof, entirely unacceptable. It's not f/1.5 that's unacceptable, it's the specific lens design they settled with that's unacceptable. It's for lack of effort, considering they had a few very decent lenses before they discontinued their ILCs.

Interestingly, Samsung somehow nailed the final 2x night mode sample while Apple's looked a little out of focus and Huawei's crop of 3x looks worse in detail than the 2x's cropped to match.

The UWA night (auto) comparison is not as much of a runaway as it initially seems. The Huawei suffers from heavy loss of borders (about 1/10th of the image is heavily smeared on each side) no doubt due to in-camera shadow lifting to compensate for heavy vignetting of the lens (also probably why night mode crops out these regions), combined with the fact that it's not very wide in the first place, if you crop out the smear at the sides, it should be compared with the main camera of the other two competitors, not the UWA. Only when there's enough illumination on the sides while not enough for the competitors' small sensors to cope that there's a clear advantage.

...And UWA night mode is another surprise win for Samsung, Huawei only has an advantage in center sharpness, whereas there's a strange blur across most of the frame.

Looking at how phone prices are increasingly linked to their camera performance makes you think the camera module costs a lot.

The camera module on my 5-year-old phone costs about $4. And I doubt a module on each one of those high-ends cost more than $15-20.

I find it very convenient that DXO mark have just updated their testing to include a wide angle test and dedicated night mode test just as apple add these features, just like the portrait inclusion a year or so back
