Automated testing shows that the Samsung Galaxy Fold fails earlier than expected

04 October 2019
Samsung claims that Galaxy Fold can survive 200,000 folds and estimates that's 5 years of use. A robot put that claim to the test twice.

Over time dust and debris will also gather in the folding mechanism - which has been proven not to protect well from things collecting inside. Even this new version. This will also reduce life span, so real life usage may not reach +/- 120 000 times of folding and unfolding.

Torture it was for Samsung to decide t make this device and torture is for users knowing that even nail can damage the screen and there is no way how to protect it.

human hands are worse than robot which applies the force equally and at same points

this is pretty much what I was afraid of: there are serious limitations in folding/unfolding a simple flat cable or pcb, but a display...? the main problem is with the bending radius / foil thickness minimum acceptable value, and trying to fold the display foil as close it as possible pushes the limit too far and local micro-crakes start developing. this is the reason huawei favours the other approach, the screen on outside, yet they yet have to make sure the mechanical components in unfolded state do not overstretch the foil or, reverse, leave creases on the display surface. most likely this is why microsoft preferred to develop the two independently folding screens solution, less spectacular for the masses but more appealing for the professionals, and nokia and sony are not going for the folding displays at all: the level of technology available at this moment is simply not sufficient....

every first generation is a disaster
these things take years & years to materialize into a working prototype

              WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?
How do you call this a test??!!! what human being would do like this machine using his hands??!! that's not folding test , it's a torturing test !!!

I'm really happy & excited to see innovation
I love the boldness of Samsung
but I personally feel there is some design flaw
Mate X looks to be a better design
                &
Microsoft Duo is a practical & functional design
Samsung & Huawei should learn from Microsoft try to take a practical approach first
or maybe these folding phones will get better with time

Seriously no one will close & open it 120000 times in one go
People need to understand continuously closing & opening will cause friction & generate heat
                  these aren't natural circumstances

It's not even taking into account the dust which is going to get trapped inside the hinge as time goes by.

When they first announced the Galaxy Fold and I expressed pessimism about its reliability, some gsma users told me: "You really think they are going to release such phone if it isnt reliable??"

Breaking news: new, limited and unpolished tech doesn't work as advertised despite minor improvements (still costs £2000).

                      Fixed that for you
