Oflife, 22 Oct 2019Technology similar to this was patented by AT&T decades... morewhile you're on the topic of blocking the camera, I just want to give a shout out the the Purism Librem 5. Really cool stuff is happening over there. It's a REAL Linux distro on a phone.

Things will be even more exciting next year when GTK4 releases though as that will have responsive widgets. Devs currently have to implement Libhandy for their GTK+ 3 apps. Also, the more hype generated, the better. Firefox doesn't have responsive controls (still... unu) and if they see that people want it, they'll develop for it. It's an open and Free alternative to Android that is actually viable because of its desktop presence and because more capable websites are showing up.

Also, PLEASE donate to awesome projects like Gnome (shell and toolkit), LibreOffice (open source office suite) and Mozilla (Firefox)!

Honestly, I liked the design of the Samsung Galaxy S9. It had a bit of bezel on the top and bottom and didn't obscure much content. I'd love to see an active version of the Galaxy S9 that didn't have curved edges. While I'm talking about the S9, I just wanna say that I'm disappointed that the S10 doesn't have an LED light or a pressure sensitive area at the bottom of the display for the home button.

I don't understand these manufacturers. If anything, some durability, extra battery life, a jack and an SD card would be nice. Oh and an unlocked/unlockable bootloader without stuff like Knox would be great.

People who are experts in the technology of screens and cameras _shouldn't_ be reassigned to fumble their way through battery research. There are other teams of experts for that.

Not everyone uses every feature. I have never needed the 'gimmick' of a selfie cam and would rather have an edge to edge screen, but so many consumers do use it that it would be ridiculous of me to expect phone manufacturers not to include them.

There's nothing wrong with a bezel, i prefer that over punch-outs or notches, but if getting rid of all three of those choices with this new technology, hell yes! Throw all the money at it and make it work. Render the bezel/notch/punch out argument pointless.

altich, 22 Oct 2019To me it's a gimmick. What is wrong with some bezels on a s... moreI feel the same. Its a shame every phone maker is trying to make bezelless rather adding for features to the phone itself. It makes sense to have a bezel for the cameras and stuff. Also curved displays are just another big gimmick with nonsensical features. In a way, essential's phone design is way better not that I am supporter of that company, its obvious. Touch screens which are truly foldable is far in the future. Nowadays makers are doing a semi bendable dual displays(by the way they are like two displays pasted side by side together).

To me it's a gimmick. What is wrong with some bezels on a smartphone for practical stuf such as ear-peaces, camera's, sensors, notification leds...). A nicely arranged top bezel packing all this stuff is still far better then having a phone where you don't know how to hold it, especially for watching media content (landscape mode). How the hell can you decently hold a current bezel free smartphone without accidentally doing stuff due to unwanted presses on the display?
Technology should make things easier, not more complex because of hypes or design requirements that no one requested.

Sometimes its known as a social camera. Front camera is useful for family shots, friends shots, video con call.

Of course if one is always solo, it means little. But a phone without a front camera is a contraction for company to make. A phone, a device for people to socialise is lacking a social feature? Thus no company will invest money to make.

If gaming phone really picks off, maybe we will see a phone all screen, without front camera... But what about twitch? or people who wish to stream their content to their fans? .. Hmmm .. very hard to remove that front camera bro..

I take like 1 selfie a year, It's fun to see that so much effort goes into the front cam ;) But ye, there's quite some selfloving people that needs the camera obviously. I still wish project ara would have seen light of day. I would have switched out so many parts of a "normal" phone. I dont seem to be the regular user. (my perfect phone: SD675, 8/128, 6000mAh, 5" full HD Screen, no front cam, 1 back cam (pixel3 like), stereo front speaker, no jack, side mounted finger print reader.)

If it is an under display camera anyway, why not place it to the center of the screen...
                        Would make more sense, no?

But I agree, battery which would last at least 3x more would be much more impressive.

This war on bezels is unhealthy. There should be war on battery endurance, phone durability, different/compact/folding form factors. There is no sense of distinction or design in all glass slabs.

Technology similar to this was patented by AT&T decades ago for a CRT based videophone, so the user could look directly at the other party. Obsolete now of course.
More recently Apple filed a patent on LCD or similar tech. It is a case of embedding the photo diodes between the pixels. Or possible having OLED pixels become photo diodes themselves.
Thing is, how can you block the camera if you don't want to be recorded?

                                  in-display is just another hole.
                                  under-display will be better

A dot drop notch is better than crappy camera quality or breakable parts. I would even take a wider notch like the Mate 30 Pro if it has something worth while in it. No one really asked for the war on headphone jacks and bezels but here we are.

I don't take selfies, so this works fine for me. Then again no front camera was fine with me too.
