Good on the banks that went out of their way to disable fingerprint authentication JUST for the affected devices, but dang, this is completely on Samsung and banks don't have to go out of their way to clean up Samsung's mess.

    >Another, NatWest, has completely removed support for S10 phones.

This is the correct way to handle this until Samsung gets this fixed. I can't believe there are even people calling for banks to remove fingerprint authentication entirely, just because ONE phone manufacturer screwed up with a couple of their devices.

How many times has this occurred. Just once, as far as I know. I have both the S10+ and the Note 10+ and have been unable to duplicate this security flaw. All the people that I have contacted with either phone, on line or in person, have not had any problems either. I would curious to see if there is any real data backing up all this Chicken Little, "The sky is falling" hysterics.

Having just switched from the Halifax to Nationwide, both banks userid, password, then additionally you entered 3 letters from your security memorable data, randomly generated.

This is a two step process, IDK,
If this second step has been removed or not in the logging on process

Banks are worried about scams so if they ha made the logging on procedures easier
The point is how could a stranger obtain two items if information

When you put the cheap protector and THEN register your fingerprint, the vulnerability exists. If you didn't register your fingerprint with a knockoff, you are safe. You may just not be able to login as the scanner will see the cheap protector's pattern instead of your fingerprint, but this can be solved by removing the offending protection

You just need to tap them on a POS (or a Samsung phone with Samsung POS) to steal money. Banks should look at their cards first because everyone is at risk, not just S10 phone owners. Crowded public transportation systems are more vulnerable as you may just have to get close to one's wallet. Since it's crowded, it won't appear suspicious. Plus there are plenty of pockets when it's crowded. Max profit. There are special anti RFID wallets against this kind of fraud but the number of users of these wallets isn't the norm yet.

Blaming the others' flaws before dealing with your own huuuge flaws is trendy.

Da Gud Shepherd, 22 Oct 2019"UK bank Nationwide Building Society has disabled the finge... moreNo it's not clear at all. It's only a problem with cheap people that splurge on a phone and cut corners with cheap screen protectors. If you use real screen protectors or even no protectors, you won't have this issue.

Typical Samsung product, I would never buy a Samsung product newly released and pay full price for it. My last Samsung phone was the note 8 I picked up last year for $350 new. It'll serve me well until the note 9 new start going for $350. At these prices I can live with the problems that all Samsung phones have.

"UK bank Nationwide Building Society has disabled the fingerprint login option in its app for owners of Samsung Galaxy S10 phones."
"It looks like the Bank of China has dropped support for Galaxy S10, Note10 and Tab S6 owners. Hapoalim Bank, one of Israel’s largest banks, sent out a notice to its customers who use an S10 or Note10 that it has removed support for fingerprint authentication as well"

PRETTY CLEAR it's a Samsung only problem. Fanboys are trying to make it look like it's a problem with all phones that have indisplay fingerprint sensors. This reminds me of the excuses Sammy fans were giving for the note 7 battery issue.

This is farcical. The last time I checked actual cards don't require authentication so why phones that use exactly the same cards? A thief can quite happily use my real card without scanning, and the banks are fine with that, but not the same card registered on my phone?! ROFL.

I have always doubted in-display FPS' effectiveness with screen protectors. Theoretically, having any layer on top of the scanner should mean the FPS does not work. I have asked so on this forum to no satisfactory answer. Smartphone OEMs have always been rushing with gimmicks and snazz at the expense of durability and usability. Another needless trend is going bezel-less and introduce complications like punch-holes, notches, under-display and retractable cameras. The fact that Samsung and the S series sells in such numbers, any fault in it becomes immediately evident. But the security of such FPS from other OEMs also needs to be checked.

I think the front (home button) or side (power button) is the best position for an FPS. Yes. I know. Bezels. But I see bezels as a useful ergonomic feature and lends the phone some distinction in design. I am also inclined to having navigation buttons on the bottom bezels allowing for a full-screen experience in a very compact screen. Not having navigation buttons on the screen makes even a small screen appear bigger and there is no need for these massive for 6+ inch screens in a 'mobile' phone.
