Google promises update to enable 90Hz on Pixel 4 in "more brightness conditions"

24 October 2019
The update will be rolled out in the coming weeks, but there are no details on the new lower bound for the brightness if you want the 90Hz refresh rate.

It's a good thing Google makes only one phone. Rather one phone in two sizes. Ever since the first Pixel, it's been a cycle of releasing hardware and then a year of releasing fixes for the hardware.

Leave it to Google to solve a problem they themselves created.

It's like they're actively trying to make the Pixel 4 as unappealing as possible.

Pabliell, 24 Oct 2019Don't know why Google even implemented the 90 Hz refresh ra... moreIsn't that what the article says. The thing is locked at 60hz and won't go to 90hz unless you turn your brightness to 75% or maximum. Most of the brands are a now moving forward to produce a higher refresh rate display devices. It's one of the most advertised feature of current gen pixels but they couldn't even get that right. Were as other brands are doing pretty good job so far. Not to mention they also cheap out on battery. No matter what the optimisation you get having more battery capacity is one of the basic thing a smartphone should be offering.

NotAnOpinion, 24 Oct 2019Hmm... That is a interesting way at looking at this. Truth is, I suspect it is not intentional, but more like a learned habit. The only thing worse than getting talked about, is not getting talked about.

Pabliell, 24 Oct 2019Don't know why Google even implemented the 90 Hz refresh ra... moreIt is their only selling point... Quite literally the one differentiator they have from a lot of the others. Seriously, take it away and you have what? An 855 processor, most have that or better. Good screen, again most phone screens are good at these prices. A great stills camera, again, this is something that a lot of top end phones can boast. Minimal bloat, actually a lot now limit bloat. What they failed on were also the batteries, most other phones in this area have higher capacities and faster charging. Their video game is beaten by Samsung and Apple. Their audio recording on videos is the worst of the flagships. Let's face it, their tricks like astral photography and dictation transcribing are niche use at best, and could effectively be added to most high end devices, algorithm s permitting. So a software company release a meh hardware phone, with a few niche tricks, and a lot of bugs. Standard.

I'm sure this update will be released right after early adopter's return policy ends XD

Then they'll be stuck with a 4 hour SOT device lol

Just imagine Google is a car manufacturer...
Here's our new proud and joy..a brilliant new Pixel car. It's marvelous and it comes standard with a dozen issues.Mostly they're nothing to worry about. But we will do everything to fix those issues within a,say, year! And is reasonably priced too, competition asks $20k for this sort of brilliance, but we'll charge you $50k.
Will you buy a car from them?

Don't know why Google even implemented the 90 Hz refresh rate. It's so unnecessary, most of games don't support it, it drains battery faster, and now they added some stupid requirements for it to work.
Just ditch the thing and get stable and constant 60 Hz, just make it so it never drops a frame. Problem solved.

promises? has people bought the beta product? LOL....

Unfortunately for Google, their USP has been matched, or virtually equaled by Apple and Samsung. Still photos were their thing, now the others have raised their game, more Apple than Samsung. If Google have any sense, they'll make a bigger leap next year, and seriously improve the photo hardware. For me, the iPhone 11 Pro is the device of the year. Large battery, great screen and an array of cameras that have 99% of scenarios sorted. Can't believe it has come to this.

Google: months to fix major issues.

Apple: days to a few weeks to fix major issues.

It's obvious who cares and works harder for their customers.

Ah yes. An update. The tried and true way to downplay the obvious issues a product has that should have been solved prior to ever considering the commercialization of said product.

Stu*id decision by Google to include 2800 mAh battery.

This is definitely not a phone for most consumers except die-hard Google Android fans. Judging by the sales numbers, there aren't that many of them.

I'm starting to think that the whole Pixel fiasco is a deliberate move. Along the lines of there being "no such thing as bad advertising". The tech bloggers/sites have a symbiotic relationship with Google.. This phone, via leaks, delivers a ton of reasons to write an article, way before it's announced. Google is happy, the websites/vlogs are happy as they get more and more traffic. Phone arrives, and even more bugs and flaws become obvious, guess what? Yep, more articles/videos. More of that means more revenue for the sites. A win for Google, a win for bloggers. Only the consumer loses.

They will be aggressively winding down the refresh rate to conserve battery. This move is actually removing some polish...
