I can't stand that all the good smart phones are 4.2-4.7". Way too big.
I don't want a phone screen to excede 4.0".
3.9-4.0" is probably my perfect size. I'm using a 3.5" Nokia N8 now, which is good, but could afford to be a tad bigger.
I remember getting paid out (razzed, insulted) for having a big phone when 3G first came out, but now it's all the rage. I don't want to walk around with a CD sized rectangle in my shorts.

4.5 suits me fine. Small enough for my pocket, big enough to do some serieus browsing. 3.5" is too small.

Raptor, I personally like 4" and above, 4.5" is the max I would say. I started off with 3.5" with keypad, but one without keypad, 4" to 4.5" is still the best.... luv my xe....:))

4 inch is a bit bigger and hard to handle if u want to use cell phone for calls and sms too, but if u want it only for movies, games and web browsing, u should get above 4"

I started with 2.4" nokia, then 2.8" then 3.5" iphone then 4.3" SGS2 nor 5.3" Note. THe note is too big for 1 handed use but fits my pocket and is great for web and video. I would never go smaller than 4.65"
Ideal for me would ne a 5.3" note with a thin bezel, maybe make the ratio 16:9.

Totally agree with the survey. I tried using the HTC sensation XL but the screen size was just too big at 4.7". Yes it's beautiful, bright and sharp but I felt clumsy holding it and maybe it was the finish (metal back) and slimness but I occasionally felt it slipping out of my hand.
Now my preference is 3.7" to 4.2", anything below 3.7" I find too compact for texting, video etc. Will happily use/swop between my Nokia N9 and HTC 3D EVO.
I think something like the Samsung Note looks like a joke - a kids toy gone wrong and I wouldn't be seen dead in public using it for calls etc

"Also, existing Android users were more likely to seek larger screens than their iPhone counterparts."
Of course! Almighty Apple said that a 3.5 in screen is the best for them, therefore they accept it no questions asked. In fact, whatever screen size Apple slaps on their devices is the best size for Apple fanatics!

Well, of course it depends on how you use it.
I for my part am used to holding my phone in my left hand and thumb it. This means I - being male of average height with medium sized hands - need either a Blackberry / Nokia E-Series style keyboard or Swype to comfortably operate it.
I found the iPod and Nokia E72 having near perfect size (110*62*8 mm, 114*58*10 mm) and the SGS2 just a little too big (125*66*9 mm), so I'll be looking for devices sized about 120*60*10 mm).
Screen wise you could put a 720*1280 px display of 4.5" on such a phone. But as the display is measuring 56*100 mm in 9:16 format, it can but have a minimal bezel to the sides.
It doesn't really need to be extra slim, because I prefer my phone to be able to replace my point and shoot camera, so some space for it and a moderate overall thickness is fine with me. This also holds true for quality of the speakers, both ear and external.
I'm prepared for up to 13 mm in this respect, but although I like quality feel (Why come so little phone with leather backing?), the weight of the device should be less than 130 g.
However, a better battery will always win my favour.
It seems, with the advent of the new HD screens, larger batteries, and finally good cameras, my dream phone is very shortly becoming real.
What's left then for the future?
Tactile screens, of course. (Coming perhaps with the SGS IV or the iPhone 6 or the Google Nexus RealFeel...)

For me, 3,7 inch is ideal, 4 inch max.

For me the ideal phone size is 3.7" .... 4" if the bezel is really thin.
3.2" is already enough for me.
I don't mind 20mm thickness, as long as the battery lasts a month.
I have very big hands, enough to easily surround the whole phone if the screen is 3.2" wide, I just like to have a solid grip on the phone while using it and keep it small enough to fit in my belt pocket.

Ideally, it should be possible to use a phone with one hand, just like a ordinary featurephone. This implies that for practical one handed operation for a normal person, the screen should not be larger than 60 mm in WIDTH. For a standard 3:4 profile, this limits practical one handed operation to about 4 inches. For other profiles, such as 16:9 widescreen or more, the size can be bigger. It is a matter of width, not diagonal size.

Ive had galaxy tab, changed it for galaxy note, came back to tab just for 7 inches of screen. Fits my pocket. Love screen sizes more the 5 inches and not bigger than 7.

I went into a mobile phone shop yesterday and looked at the new Sony Xperia S. This 4.3" screen size would be quite nice but the bezel is too big overall and the bottom of the phone just seems unnecessarily long. The back is just a great big hunk of black plastic and this was a deal breaker for me. I compared it side by side to the SG2 and that seems smaller, sleeker and more attractive. In conclusion, screen size 4.3" is ideal for me but only if the overall size of the phone is not too big.

I really dont know why a hundred billion company only capable product 1 unique screen size for iphones. Izzit being consistent or lazy, i really dont know. As a user, we dont even have a choice of screen size, and all the dudes still queue up waiting it to launch. I really feel something wrong there.

First i thought 4.3" on my HD2 would be crazy. but after those two years with it, i want even more now.
i used the Sensation XL a bit, with its 4.7" screen, and thats just perfect.
can't wait for the One X ;)

the size of your palm of your hands, your fingers and your gender have now got to the point where they mean nothing at all, if one is into smartphone, I think the bigger the better, I see many girls here Korea using Galaxy Note
